WTF, Virginia? Feral Child Discovered Caged in Mobile Home, Eating Herself

Brian and Shannon Gore

In a major WTF, Virginia? incident last week, a young girl was found caged in her crib inside her parents’ mobile home in Gloucester County. According to girl’s father, Brian Gore, she had been there since last summer.

The girl, believed to be between 5 and 6 years old, was in a state of decrepitude. The Sheriff’s Office described her as “extremely malnourished and suffering from severe starvation…[and] covered in feces and in the nude.” One report indicates that she was eating pieces of her dead skin for nourishment.

That’s not all: police also found the remains of a young child of indeterminate age and gender when digging around a shed on the property, which made the charges against Brian and Shannon Gore, the mother, go up from felony child abuse and attempted capital murder to first-degree murder.

Authorities found the young girl when investigating a robbery that lead them to the Gore residence. A homeowner in the neighborhood had accused the Gores of stealing a gold bullion from his home and selling it at an auction house.

Tim Hudnall, one of the Gores’ neighbors, told The Daily Press that he had never seen the girl before, making the incident – in all likelihood – another instance of a feral child. Sadly, a look at the history of these children reveals that the prospects are grim for the young girl. She is currently being cared for at the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk. that's so insane!!! & heart breaking poor baby!

  • Tera Kristen

Since she's only 5-6 years old she has a much higher chance of fully recovering and living a completely normal life (provided she is loved and cared for properly from now on). Kids are very resilient – and before a certain age they can bounce back from almost anything. I hope that she lives a long, healthy life surrounded by healthy, caring individuals.

Also, I think articles of this nature should be accompanied with some information that could be used to help this girl (otherwise it can seem like Thought Catalog is taking advantage of a sad situation.) For example, she is being taken care of by: Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters – I'm sure donations can be made.

      100% agree. Great comment.

specifically, she is not yet too old to learn a first language, which is really the most important step to socializing an abused/neglected child. thanks, linguistics 201!

  • Jenna

She is not a feral child assuming she was exposed to her parents and brother. Even if she was neglected, she would have observed human interaction and heard human speech. I studied this in college. She'll have a ton of issues due to malnourishment and abuse and neglect, but barring some specific brain damage she would probably be able to speak and interact in a fairly normal way. She's also still within the critical period for language development.

Yeah, she might have a future as GEICO's next neanderthal spokesperson. She could be like, “When I starved and abused the child I didn't want but refused to abort or sell or give to someone who did want her, GEICO saved me a ton of money on my car insurance.”

If these people don't get the death penalty, it will be because someone thinks it's somehow inappropriate to kill them. Too bad we didn't have more rednecks and “conservatives” around here. I'd like to see them argue for preserving this bizarre couple's precious privacy.

  • Cowboy Santos

    what. the. FUCK.
fucking scum parents like this should be given the EXACT same treatment as they made their child/ren go through.
there is no excuse for this.
    this angers me. a lot.

  • Greg Petliski

We have to take tests to drive and to graduate high school, why not to have children? Maybe we'd see fewer instances of this and other forms of abuse.

  • Jody Fossler

ask yourself why this didn't happen in Connecticut. (EVERYTHING IS POLITICAL)

  • Masha Sun

Her parents look exactly the same, leading me to believe they are brother and sister.

  • LDN

how do people initiate this stuff in their relationships? i don't get it.

do they set out to find another heartless motherfucker or is it just chance and one day, one of them's like 'shall we lock our child up and not feed her?' and the other nods and smiles gleefully as if waiting for that moment?
