Stories of abandoned infants found in dumpsters or other unfortunate places are fairly common, but in an event that took place yesterday, a woman from Queens, NY brought it to a new level of WTF.
When Dawa Lama, 23, gave birth to a baby yesterday at Elmhurst Hospital Center and didn’t feel like keeping it, she dropped it in a trash can outside of the emergency room. Feeling tired from the ordeal, she went home and ate some rice with lentil soup and took a nap. A couple of hours later, still sleeping, the cops arrived.
Police took her into custody, although it’s uncertain what charges she will face. This might be in part because under New York City law, new mothers are actually allowed to leave newborns infants at any public hospital or fire station, as long as it’s within five days of their birth. Presumably, however, trash cans are not the intended receptacle for these abandoned infants, and that seems to render Lama’s moral affront all the more outrageous.
As of yet, the baby is still alive, but it was found in critical condition.
According to reports, nobody knew of Lama’s pregnancy, including the father.
“If that’s my baby, I’m going to take care of it,” he said.
