How (Not) To Travel The World

By

I’m going to see the world someday.
Just as soon as I finish university.
There’s nothing I want more than to travel anywhere and everywhere.
I swear I won’t be one of those people who lets their dreams slip away.
I’ll go to Disneyland in Paris.
Go on every single ride there is.
I’ll scream until my lungs collapse.
I’ve got plenty of time. I’m only 17.

I’m going to see the world someday.
Just as soon as I’ve established my career.
I was going to take a gap year after uni.
But then this job opportunity came along and I couldn’t say no.
I’ll go rock climbing in Canada.
Maybe I can find work on an alpaca farm.
Live with a local family in the rugged countryside.
I’ve got plenty of time. I’m only 22.

I’m going to see the world someday.
Just as soon as I save enough money.
I was meant to travel once I got my career under control.
But then I got a mortgage and it’s not going to pay for itself.
I’ll volunteer at an orphanage in Uganda.
My cousin did it last year and it changed his life.
I’ll come back home with a whole new outlook.
I’ve got plenty of time. I’m only 35.

I’m going to see the world someday.
Just as soon as the kids have grown up and moved out.
I managed to get enough money together.
But plans always change when kids come along.
I’ll eat a burrito in Mexico.
But not at one of those touristy restaurants.
It will be somewhere off the beaten track and filled with locals.
I’ve still got time left. I’m only 47.

I’m going to see the world someday.
Just as soon as mum gets better.
I promised myself I’d go when the kids moved out.
But then mum had the stroke and I’m not sure how long she has left.
I’ll go to Tahiti and relax on a beach somewhere.
Maybe I can convince the boys to come.
Have ourselves some father and son bonding time.
I’ve still got time left. I’m only 53.

I’m going to see the world someday.
Just as soon as I have enough time.
Mum passed away 3 months ago.
She said if she could do one thing differently she’d have travelled.
I promised her I wouldn’t make the same mistake as she did.
I’ve just been so busy with the funeral and everything.
Next month I’ll start looking at flights again.
I’ve still got time. I’m only 68.

I was going to see the world someday.
But life just got in the way.
My legs aren’t what they used to be.
My wife says we’re too old to go frolicking around the world.
My doctor says it’s not a great idea.
Maybe they’re all right.
I was never supposed to be one of those people that lets their dreams slip
away.
I had plenty of time to see the world but now it’s too late.
