10 Awesome (And Free!) Things To Do While Traveling In Amsterdam
Who doesn’t love Amsterdam and the word free? Amsterdam is the king of all things cool and dope. If you are traveling there anytime soon or are just looking to kill some time, Amsterdam has at least something that will interest you. Here is a list of free things to do while traveling through Amsterdam!
1. See A Concert:
From mid-September through June, you can see free concerts during lunchtime. The concerts happen every Wednesday from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm in the classical theatre, “The Royal Concertgebouw.”
2. Cannabis College:
It’s almost impossible to make a list of awesome things to do in Amsterdam without including at least one pot reference. The Cannabis College is a non-profit information centre about the loved herb and even offers an online quiz to get a free “Cannabis College Diploma.” The college is huge on Activism and takes part in many events to raise awareness to their cause.
3. The Red Light District:
One of the most talked about places in Amsterdam, the district features brothels, sex shops, and museums to peak your interests and entertain you on your trip. Window shopping at places such as “B-1 Erotic Shopping Center” and the “Happy Shop,” are sure to be some of the biggest highlights of your adventure.
4. Open Air Festival at Vondelpark:
The festival happens every summer and features: music, dance, theatre, and stand-up comedy, providing you a great opportunity to enjoy the local culture without spending a dime!
5. Be Taken Away By The Bridges And Canals:
Amsterdam is home to more than 1,200 bridges with the oldest dating back to 1648. The bridges and canals add to the already beautiful landscape of the capital city and at night many of the bridges lights shine against the water casting up reflections, illuminating the city.
6. Explore Begijnhof:
Founded in the Middle Ages, Begijnhof is the only inner court in Amsterdam. The court is hidden in “Spui Square” behind a heavy wooden door. It’s advised that you are not loud while visiting the small historically filled area since there are still people living there.
7. Go For A Swim Or Jog At The Amsterdamse Bos:
The large park is home to a forest, large bodies of water, swimming pools, sports facilities, and an artificial mountain, along with running and walking trails. The pools range in size for different age groups and the mountain, known as “De Heuvel,” is great for winter sports. The park is the perfect place for a relaxing afternoon picnic with the family and has plenty of activities to keep everyone entertained.
8. Take A Ferry To Noord:
The Noord isn’t known to have many tourist attractions, which makes it the perfect place to escape the crowds. The area was built on a dike to prevent flooding, offering a unique view of the landscape. This is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city and filled with history. Best of all, the ferry to Noord is free!
9. Visit The Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk:
Amsterdam is home to many unique structures and it’s obvious that this isn’t just a modern phenomenon. Built in the mid-17th century, the neo-gothic church is an amazing architectural structure. It was designed by Theo Molkenboer, the leading architect in the northern Netherlands at the time, and is believed to be his best work.
10. The Amsterdam Light Festival:
A stunning display of the city and canal lights from November 27, 2014 to January 18, 2015. Last year, festival goers had taken the Illuminade, which was an evening walk, through the Plantage neighborhood of Amsertdam to see illuminated pieces of artwork from popular artists.
