5 Things You Should Be Doing In Your New Relationship (So It Lasts)

By

So you are past the dating stage and have entered relationship territory. You are finally getting a fresh start and your relationship is like the best thing since sliced bread. You’re happy and content with the fact that it is finally happening. Now that it’s official, here are a few things you should be doing in order to make things last.

  1. Learning
You should be learning something new about your partner every day. The two of you should be sharing new experiences and growing together. Learning about your partner is the best thing you can do in a relationship. It creates understanding in a relationship and the foundation to make it last. When you fall in love with someone new, you fall in love with an original, not a splitting image of your dream guy or girl. Never try to change them to fit your requirements, learn to adjust to their habits and who they are. I always say you never truly know your partner until you know what sauce he or she prefers with their chicken nuggets, or favorite dressing they like to top their salads. Blue Cheese?!! Do you even know me?! Yuck.
  2. Writing about your partner.
Are you a poet? Write a short spoken word piece about your special someone and read it to them. Are you a songwriter? Excite your partner with some kind lyrics about how much they mean to you. If you are neither of the three, and instead the type of person who doesn’t necessarily have a way with words, pick up a nice greeting card next time you find yourself shopping. These things are great to reference as time passes, a simple and easy reminder of how much you care about each other. Don’t get me wrong, verbally communicating is also what needs to be happening, but that can get boring. Be thinking of more creative ways to get through to your partner as well.
  3. Fighting Fair
Dr. Phil said it best: How you argue, especially how you end an argument can determine the long-term success or failure of your relationship. Let’s be real, disagreements are going to happen but you must maintain control. Enter every disagreement with the intention of reaching a solution. Geez I sound like my boyfriend. Be open and practice listening to your partner more than trying to get your point across. Remember arguments should be temporary, so don’t let them get out of hand and be upfront with your partner about how you feel. If you cannot resolve your arguments in the early stages of a relationship, it is likely not to happen as time goes on. Fight fair now so you can learn from each other and figure out the best ways to compromise when disagreements come along later.
  4. Kissing
Did you know that kissing serves a variety of functions in a relationship? Some theories on kissing suggest that we do it to help assess genetic quality of potential mates, increase arousal, and keep relationships together. When a couple kisses, they exchange emotions that can sometimes not be expressed otherwise. Think about the first time you kissed your partner. Whether it was extremely awkward or the best kiss ever, it was special. You and your partner should be kissing all the time to keep things ignited. Kissing fosters romantic compatibility and will improve the intimacy in what you share. So be spontaneous and Pucker Up!
  5. Giving it time.
The truth is, you cannot rush a relationship into reaching its full potential. Just as the time you spent going through bad relationships to get to this one, a good relationship will take time. Anything necessary for a healthy, lasting romance takes time to develop. For instance—think about the trust; loyalty and compatibility demonstrated through both good times and the rough ones. If you try to load the relationship with too much emotional weight before it can handle it, you may end up ruining what was almost ready. Be patient and understand that if things are meant to be, they will be in due time.
