What Is A New Moon Ritual?
Moon rituals are spells performed during specific lunar phases that harness the power of the moon to achieve your goal. The most powerful lunar phases are the new moon and the full moon.
The new moon is a powerful time for new beginnings. Rituals and spells related to new romantic relationships, new job opportunities, new healthy habits and changing course toward any kind of new beginning will be especially efficacious during this time.
Have some sort of talisman with you while you perform this ritual. It could be a crystal, a moon pendant, or a ring of any kind. Keep that object with you for the next 30 days and let it remind you of how good you feel when you are following your new healthy habit.
Preparing For Your New Moon Ritual
What you need will vary by the ritual you want to do, but generally these steps will get you in the right mental space and prepare the physical objects you need to have read:
[*] Take a salt bath to relax and prepare for your ritual. You may wish to add herbs to your bath based on which kind of spell you are going to do.
[*] Sage to clear you space of whatever energy it was previously holding and prepare it for your ritual.
[*] Make sure you have a private area to perform the ritual where you will feel safe and relaxed. You can perform rituals alone or with a group, but if you are performing one alone, you should have a private area to do this. If you have a private outdoor space, you can do your ritual outside, but inside is perfectly fine.
[*] Make sure anything that makes a noise (an iPhone, a landline, a computer, a tv, a weather device) is turned off and keep pets out of the room so you are free from distraction.
[*] Make yourself comfortable and play music (softly) if you’d like.
[*] Gather any items you need for your ritual.
New Moon Rituals
Try these new moon rituals based on your desired outcome:
A new moon ritual to attract a job opportunity
Light a green candle and take a sheet of paper and write down a list of things you want in a job. Be specific. Write down the title of the job you want, the company you want to work for, what you want the office to look or feel like — anything that’s important to you.
On the other side of the paper write down at least 10 things you would bring to the job (I am a good communicator, any company would be lucky to have my design skills, I am eager to learn, etc). When you are done, seal the paper in a green envelope and leave both the envelope and the candle somewhere you will see them every day.
On the next full moon, light the candle again and burn the envelope and paper inside. This doesn’t mean it will take a full lunar cycle to manifest your new job opportunity (it may take more or less), it’s just completing the cycle of setting your intentions for your new job on the two most powerful days of the lunar cycle.
A new moon ritual to attract a new romantic relationship
Light three red candles empty a container of seeds into a small pot, fill with dirt. Place a piece of rose quartz in the dirt (or if it’s too large, next to the pot).
On a piece of paper write a list of things you want in your new romantic partner. Be specific about the way you want them to make you feel, attributes they should have, even their name. On the other side, make a list of qualities you will bless this new person with (I will make them feel listened to, I use my culinary gifts to make them happy, I’ll share my love of movies with them). When you’re done, seal this paper in a red envelope.
Sleep with the red envelope under your pillow until whatever you planted is large enough to replant outside. Burn the envelope and bury the ashes with the plant.
Each time you pass by your plant, or make sure the envelope is tucked under your pillow, remind yourself about what you hope to both give and gain in your new romantic relationship.
A new moon ritual to attract money
Light three green candles as you focus on the amount of money you would like to attract. Recite this prayer for manifesting money:
From The Light of God that I Am.
From The Love of God that I Am.
From The Power of God that I Am.
From The Heart of God that I Am.
I Decree — I dwell in the midst of Infinite Abundance.
The Abundance of God is my Infinite Source. The River of Life never stops flowing. It flows through me into lavish expression. Good comes to me through unexpected avenues and God works in a myriad of ways to bless me.
I now open my mind to receive my good.
Nothing is too good to be true. Nothing is too wonderful to have happen. With God as my Source, nothing amazes me. I Am not burdened by thoughts of past or future. One is gone. The other is yet to come. By the power of my belief, coupled with my purposeful fearless actions and my deep rapport with God, my future is created and my abundance made manifest.
I ask and accept that I am lifted in this and every moment into Higher Truth. My mind is quiet. From this day forward I give freely and fearlessly into life and Life gives back to me with magnificent increase. Blessings come in expected and unexpected ways. God provides for me in wondrous ways. I AM indeed grateful. And I let it be so.
Burn the candles at least once a day moving forward until they are gone. Each time you light them, remember your intention to attract a specific amount of money and repeat the prayer.
A new moon ritual to attract adherence to a healthy habit you want to adopt
Decide what your habit will be ahead of time. For your ritual, you need to be able to do a version of your habit, even if it’s symbolic. For instance, if the habit you want to adopt is to eat healthier dinners, lovingly prepare a healthy soup for yourself by candle light and eat it slowly, savoring the flavor of the soup and how it feels to eat something after lovingly preparing it for yourself so that you can feel good.
If your new habit is to exercise every day, plan a night time stroll in the moonlight. Make sure you are not distracted during the walk by a pet or another person so that you can focus on how good your body feels while you are walking. Focus on how your body craves exercise and movement, and how alive and relaxed you feel in that moment.
A new moon ritual to move on from someone who has broken your heart
Find a photo of the person you would like a “new beginning” from. Take a match and burn the bottom of the photograph and set it on a fireproof plate or dish so that it will burn. While you watch the photo burn, visualize the ending of your relationship and how the strong emotions you feel now will transform like the photo is turning to ash. When the photo is done burning and the ash is cool enough to touch, go outside and bury it into the earth so that your old relationship can be part of something that grows into something new.
Moon Phases // When To Perform Your Ritual
New Moon (also called a Dark Moon): The first lunar phase. The moon is not visible in the night sky. An ideal time for divination and banishment magic.
Waxing Crescent: The second lunar phase. The right side of the moon is an illuminated crescent (the crescent appears on the left side in the southern hemisphere). An ideal time for setting intentions, beginning a new project, or spells related to self-improvement.
1st Quarter: The third lunar phase. The moon appears half illuminated in the night sky. (In the northern hemisphere, the right side is illuminated. In the southern hemisphere, the left side is illuminated). An ideal time for manifesting and performing spells meant to attract money, love, friendships or opportunities.
Waxing Gibbous: The fourth lunar phase. Most of the moon is illuminated, except for a small black crescent on the left side (reversed in the southern hemisphere). The ideal time to continue work on manifesting you have already started.
Full Moon: The fifth lunar phase. The entire moon is illuminated in the night sky. This is the most powerful time of the lunar cycle. This is the time to do big, important spells that you will need a powerful force behind.
Waning Gibbous: The sixth lunar phase. Most of the moon is illuminated, except for a small black crescent on the right side (reversed in the southern hemisphere). The ideal time for spells and rituals related to cleansing, protection, and banishment.
3rd Quarter: The seventh lunar phase. The moon appears half illuminated in the night sky. An ideal time for working through blocked energy.
Waning Crescent: The eighth and final lunar phase. A crescent is illuminated on the left side (reversed in the southern hemisphere). An ideal time for clearing negativity or spells that call for closure or endings.
New Moon Meditations
If you’re not ready to do a whole new moon ritual, you can still harness the spirit of the new moon by doing a guided new moon meditation:
New Moon Bath
You can also do a new moon bath as a ritual. Run a hot bath and surround it with 4 white candles (to symbolize north, south, east, west). Under each candle place a small piece of paper on which you’ve written your heart’s desire for the month to come.
In the bath, add Himalayan sea salt and white sage leaves. As you soak, relax and visualize the month to come and your desires coming to fruition.
Do New Moon Rituals Work?
You don’t have to believe in magic to believe in or perform a new moon ritual. When you perform a spell or ritual, you take the time to stop and think clearly about what you want in life and focus for an extended period of time on that intention. Simply getting clear about what you want makes it more likely that you will achieve that outcome, but the extended nature of some spells (like leaving a crystal grid out) serves as a daily reminder of your intention. This can help you stay focused on your goals.
