What Creepy News Story Makes You Insist On Checking The Locks Every Night?

The other day I was reading an article about very moving historical photos. One of the photos was so insane, I just lost it. It’s a photo serial killer Robert Ben Rhoades took of one of his victims, Regina Walters, as she’s clearly afraid and trying to get away from him. The photo was taken in the barn where they found her body. Here’s a link to the photo (I’m unclear who owns the copyright to it, and it’s kind of traumatic anyway so I’m not posting it here).

I was terrified of this photo. I found this captivating GQ article about him. I Googled him more. This was at ~2am and I was afraid to go into my hallway though I eventually did to go downstairs and flip the deadbolt.

There are news stories or old Wikipedia stories we read every now and then that do this to us. I’ve documented some more of my own here and here. But, I want to hear yours. What did you read about that you couldn’t get out of your head? What do you think about every time your house makes a weird noise or you’re walking down a dark street or pulling into a rest area (thanks, Unsolved Mysteries).

Post about the news story you will never forget in the comments or email them to afterdark@thoughtcatalog.com and I’ll update this post with answers and repost it (like when we asked this question, and received almost 400 responses). And — if you’re the kind of person that likes to be scared once in awhile, like Creepy Catalog on Facebook, we post all of Thought Catalog’s creepy content there and we’re soliciting and posting reader stories there as well.
