A ridiculously comprehensive list of the best scary movies streaming on Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu right now curated by Chrissy Stockton and the Creepy Catalog team. List is updated bi-weekly and feel free to give us suggestions of your favorite horror movies in the comments.

Creep (2014)

Creep

A truly creepy found footage film following a man answering a Craigslist ad for a videographer. The job seems sketchy (the man is strange, the mountain house is secluded) but he decides to stick it out for the money. This is obviously a big mistake. There are jump scares but the whole thing feels actually scary and the plot is fresh. The first in an intended Creep trilogy.

What kind of scary is it? Weird and unsettling

Streaming on: Netflix, Amazon

Creepy quote: “Because when you stick a knife in something, and you gut it and you really dig inside, I don’t know man, there’s all this beautiful stuff. and um… I got a little surprise for you in there. See ya soon, Buddy!”

Creep 2

Creep 2

The second movie in an intended Creep trilogy. This time a woman with a YouTube show where she meets and befriends strangers on Craigslist. She meets the main character from the original Creep and begins to document him for a day, slowly realizing what a gigantic mistake she has made. Fun fact: the script for this movie was only an outline, so what you’re seeing is a lot of improvisation that adds to the overall unsettling effect of the movie. The opening scene itself is fun and horrifying enough to make the whole movie worth it (but I promise the rest of the film is just as good). At one point it had a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

What kind of scary is it? Weird and unsettling

The Houses October Built (2014)

The Houses October Built
The Houses October Built

A found footage film following a group of friends as they attempt to find the scariest haunted house of all time. The attraction they’re searching for is the ultimate underground extreme haunted house called “blue skeleton”. The lines between what’s “real” horror soon blurs. The setting is extra creepy because the next time you visit a haunted house, you’ll worry about what’s going down behind the scenes.

What kind of scary is it? Worth a watch before going to a haunted house

Watch this if you liked: Hell House LLC, Crow’s Nest, The Blair Witch Project

Streaming on: Amazon

Creepy quote: “As many haunts as we can, all across America.”

The Houses October Built 2

It’s revealed that the crew from the original The Houses October Built is alive. Inexplicably, they decide to overcome the PTSD the first go left them with by going on another haunted house road trip. It’s not long before they see the Blue Skeleton members again and the horror unfolds in a similar fashion to the first movie. If you enjoyed the first movie, you’ll dig it.

What kind of scary is it? Pretty much only scary/worth it if you enjoyed the original

Streaming on: Amazon

Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

The Taking Of Deborah Logan
The Taking Of Deborah Logan

The scariest movies play off something in real life that’s already terrifying. Alzheimer’s disease isn’t spooky scary, but it is horrifying to think about you or a loved one’s mind degrading before your eyes. Because that’s the movie’s topic, you start it in a state of unease and it goes from there. A woman allows a documentary crew to follow her mother and document her progressing Alzheimer’s disease. It’s soon revealed that her bizarre and troubling behavior may not be caused by Alheimer’s at all.

What kind of scary is it? Aggressive

Dead Silence (2007)

Dead Silence
Dead Silence

A formulaic, but watchable horror movie about a man whose wife is murdered after they receive a mysterious ventriloquist dummy from a stranger. The man returns to his hometown to try to solve the murder mystery and stumbles on the story of a murdered ventriloquist, Mary Shaw. He tries to track down her spirit before she murders more people by ripping out their tongues.

Children of the Corn (1984)

Children of the Corn
Children of the Corn

A bickering couple end up stranded in a seemingly deserted town in the middle of nowhere, Nebraska. The whole town is eery, but the extremely religious children they encounter make it a lot creepier. There are some moments that haven’t aged well, but in general I think people forget how unsettling the original was because the franchise kind of went off the rails a bit. Pick up the Stephen King short story if you want to make an entire Children of the Corn themed weekend.

What kind of scary is it? Creepy religious kids

In Los Angeles she deals with her fame from the horror franchise and decides to reprise her role one more time. Heather and her son Dylan soon learn that Freddy has made the transition from a fictional story to a real (and evil) nightmare and they fight him throughout the self-referrential movie.

A poor mother (Amelia) and son (Sam) in Australia are targeted by The Babadook, after reading a story about him. Sam suffers from insomnia and is generally crazy, screaming (and annoying) through the movie as his mom tries to do anything to protect him from the increasingly strange events that begin happening to them. The rest of the family soon experiences missing time as well. Looking for an answer, the family’s matriarch (Lucy) begins to suspect they may have been victims of an alien abduction. From there, “the greys” only get more aggressive.

Hush (2016)

Hush
Hush

If you’re in the mood for a classic slasher movie, Hush is one of the best ones in the last few years. There’s a nice little twist (the heroine is deaf) that makes it feel new while still being a pretty traditional horror movie. Aside from this element it’s a classic home invasion movie. The final girl struggles against a nameless, faceless bad guy and tries to be the last one standing.

What kind of scary is it? slasher movie, home invasion

13 Cameras (2016)

Expecting newlyweds Ryan and Claire move into a rental home in a residential neighborhood. They dismiss their extremely creepy landlord, figuring they won’t have to deal with him often. Creepy quote: “Fibre optics. Now, it’s a little bit more expensive, but in terms of home security, it’s top of the line. 1080p, backup batteries, and they’re practically invisible. There is nothing more off-putting than inviting some folks over to your place, they see one of these ancient, convenient store cameras, pointing directly at them as they’re waiting out on your front porch. You know what I mean? Who wants that? No one. These little guys right here, they can be hidden almost anywhere.”

The Ward (2001)

The Ward
The Ward

In the 1960’s a young girl named Kristen is locked up in a mental ward after burning a farmhouse down. One of the doctor runs “experimental” treatments and the ward is haunted by a violent spirit. Kristen searches for the truth. It’s Girl, Interrupted but 100% more spookiness!

The Lazarus Effect (2015)

The Lazarus Effect
The Lazarus Effect

I don’t know how they got Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, AND Evan Peters into one decent horror movie, but they DID. A group of medical researchers create a serum that can bring people back from the dead. As we learned from Flatliners, this isn’t a good idea. The people they bring back aren’t the same.

Chucky’s back. This time he’s attacking a family he was once friends with when he was Charles Lee Ray. The family includes a parapalegic who literally crawls her way through the battle. Fun fact: the leading lady is played by Fiona Dourif — Brad Dourif’s (voice of Chucky) daughter!

A horror classic everyone needs to see at least once. 12-year-old Regan plays with a Ouija board and comes into contact with a demon, who possesses her. Straight from VHS tapes to new media and stuff that hasn’t been invented yet… I won’t say they didn’t jump the shark because hey, look at that shark they’re jumping over, but it’s still a romp. This one has four stories that make up the anthology. It’s definitely worth a watch (and has some very scary parts!) if you enjoyed the first two in the series.
