5 Smart And Funny Girls In Hollywood Who Kick Pretty And Boring To The Curb

By

Fergie said it best when she sang, “Big girls don’t cry (don’t cry, don’t cry, don’t cry, la la la la la)”. There’s this new rumbling in Hollywood that proves how big girls, in fact, laugh. I guess it’s thanks to the geek-is-the-new-chic trend (Hello to things like The Big Bang Theory, Silicon Valley and basically everything that J.J. Abrams, Joss Whedon and Zack Snyder do that kick your brain cells into high gear) that has made being smart, sarcastic and funny the real “in” thing with a lot of young and young-hearted folks so much so that pop culture addicts like myself aren’t that into pretty little actresses anymore. Today, it’s all about young actresses who can’t help but make fun of themselves and possess talents so compelling that Hollywood can’t help but put a spotlight on them. And for normal-sized or heavyset girls like me, this is more than refreshing — it’s a big relief! Here is a list of smart and funny young women who are inspiring girls by making it BIG in Hollywood.

1. Mindy Kaling

She may have gotten a start as a behind-the-camera writer with a small role in The Office, but Mindy Kaling’s writing prowess allowed her to get on board her own television show. Although The Mindy Project was recently cancelled (cue tear), the funny girl has definitely made a mark as the weighty woman of color who had impenetrable self-confidence. I’ve literally lost count of how many boys she’s kissed in the show. But the character she developed and dialogue she wrote were unique and fresh. And who could ever mistake that cute high-pitched voice whenever she calls her love interest, “Danneeee? Danneeee?” This girl obviously will continue to make it big in Hollywood without compromising her voice and looks.

2. Lena Dunham

If there’s one thing that Lena Dunham was able to do, it’s to break the taboo of full girls getting naked in front of the camera. Years ago, when The Desperate Housewives was at its peak, Marcia Cross famously shot a scene wearing sexy lingerie behind a fur coat at the age of 45. And she admitted to working out like crazy when she found out she was about to get exposed on television. But Lena does it effortlessly in every single episode of Girls with several tattoos to match. She is the brain of the entire Girls television series and she is always on point when it comes to telling the rite of passage stories of young twenty-somethings.

3. Amy Schumer

This girl is the epitome of every normal girl who worries about how big her arms look in a photo. It’s so honest and true across the female population that it hurts. According to Amy, her arms are so large that they register as legs in Los Angeles, poking fun at the absolutely skinny limbs that are accepted in the celebrity scene. If you take a look at her interviews, most notably the ones with Ellen de Generes, you’ll find her worries are quite similar to yours, especially when she compares herself with the beautiful and ever-elegant Diana Agron. Amy has insecurities and that’s normal. But what makes it healthy is that she openly talks about it instead of holing up in some hidden corner and feeling sorry about herself. She’s different and she’s not ashamed of it.

4. Rebel Wilson

Who doesn’t love an adorable rebel with an accent? She’s come all the way from down under, but boy oh boy, did Rebel Wilson make a big entrance into Hollywood. Known for her unique spontaneity when delivering her punch lines, Rebel has expanded her skill portfolio from comedy, acting and singing (with the ever-popular Pitch Perfect movies).

5. Kat Dennings

Kat had her early beginnings as a bratty elite teenager in Sex and The City, but she’s definitely gone a long way with her role now as one of the popular show, Two Broke Girls. She is snarky, sarcastic and mean but girls who have a lot to say can’t help but look up to her and men, well, can’t help but look at her and the two wonderful things she brings in front of the camera. Her character, Max, proves that boobs do not mean ‘stupid’. They mean heavy and in-your-face verbal comebacks.

These girls are making it big in Hollywood and they are meant to stay. In fact, more of them should start coming out of hiding because smarts and talent will always outwit and outlast physical looks. And the world could use more girls like them.
