Read This When You’re Wondering If It’s Time To Walk Away

You’ve been at each other’s throats for months. The simplest statements turn to contention and misunderstanding. Things that you once found amusing and funny are now maddening. Nothing you do is right and nothing they do is working. And although it’s terrifying to even consider, you find yourself asking:

Is It Time to Walk Away?

Let me guess – it started out beautifully. You had the love story that made your friends 50% jealous 50% thrilled for you. Your families got along, you both loved Korean BBQ, and his laugh made you weak in your knees.

One day it’s Pintrest-ing engagement rings and the next it’s sleeping back to back instead of your typical spooning position. And sure, every couple has it’s tribulations, but soon you notice that this is a nightly occurrence.

So do you leave or stay?

My friends all have the same knee-jerk reaction. End it. Find someone who makes you happy. You deserve better. But it’s easier said than done when it’s not happening to you. You’ve built an attachment to this person regardless of how long you’ve been together. They’ve seen sides of you that you don’t show to many others. You’ve put your heart and vulnerability on the line for what feels like the hundredth time and you don’t want to walk away without a fight.

If you’re like me, your brain is cluttered with questions.

Am I happy in this relationship? Do other couples doubt each other like my partner and I do? How much fighting is too much?

And the scariest question of all: If this is love, then why am I doubting it?

I don’t pretend to be versed in the topic of love (who is?) but answer me this: Are you happy? Do you feel loved? Do you feel safe? Do you get excited when you think about spending time with your partner? Do you smile when they call?

If you answered yes to ALL OF THOSE, sit down and have a talk with your significant other. Remind each other why you fell in love and how important they are to you. And always remember, nobody is perfect! If you two can push past whatever funk you’re in and focus on the essentials again, then it’s the real deal.

If it’s worth it, then it will work itself out in the end. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
