A Reddit Campaign Is Turning A Viral Article Into A Documentary On Homelessness

As we all know, Reddit is often a source of memes and infighting and general internet froth, but occasionally, it can be a real agent for creative good.

The Epic Of Hershey tells the story of a young boy named Hershey who lives in the homeless shelters of New York City. Hershey goes on a journey to save his friends by seeking the real name of the Blue Lady, a goddess that is part of a wild mythology that the homeless children believe in, who can only be summoned by speaking her true name.

Based on a massively viral article published in the Miami New Times, the short film helps to shed light on the very real phenomenon of homeless children in America inventing new creation myths and folklore in order to make sense of their chaotic world. The film will star Academy Award and Golden Globe nominated actor Eric Roberts, and is directed by NYC filmmaker Douglas McGinness. They’re currently in the final hours of their Kickstarter campaign which will cover the costs to make the film.
