Demi Lovato has never been one to remain silent. Throughout her time in the limelight, she’s opened up about her mental illness, eating disorder, and self-harm, as well as her drug and alcohol abuse. In fact, she chronicled her time in rehab and her recovery in an MTV documentary. Perhaps that’s why it’s so unsurprising that Lovato decided to write a song about her next biggest struggle: her relapse from sobriety.

In her new single “Sober”, Lovato sings:

Momma, I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore

And daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor

To the ones who never left me

We’ve been down this road before

I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore

Lovato also touches upon the physical pain she’s endured due to her addiction, including “shakes” and the “cold sweat”, as well as how she believes her own loneliness is what has caused her to turn back to drugs and alcohol. “I want to be a role model, but I’m only human,” she sings.

Lovato’s candid account of her most recent struggles with sobriety is honestly heartbreaking. The popstar, who started out on Disney, has fought hard to be a role model for young woman, and many have lauded her transparency about her addictions and self-image.

In the last lines of the song, Demi vows to fight for sobriety again: “I’m sorry that I’m here again / I promise I’ll get help / It wasn’t my intention / I’m sorry to myself.”
