’13 Reasons Why’ Is Officially Getting A Third Season

This article contains spoilers for ’13 Reasons Why’ season 1 and 2

Good news for 13 Reasons Why fans: Netflix has officially renewed the hit show for a third season, which means you’re going to be getting a whole lot more of Clay, Alex, and Jessica.

The renewal isn’t too surprising, considering the show has had a huge following since it first released in 2017. While the first season was certainly controversial for how it depicted suicide, depression, and sexual assault, it still received mass critical acclaim. Still, part of me was kind of hoping they’d hit the breaks on the show, since the second season took a very obvious downturn from the first. Not only did much of the material feel more for shock value than anything else, but without the plot of the YA book to follow, it felt stale (and, honestly, cringeworthy). I’m far from the only person with this opinion — in fact, it only received 28% on Rotten Tomatoes.

At least season two gave us some material to work with for a third season. After all, we were left with a cliffhanger of Clay holding a gun outside of the school spring fling, which will definitely come with some unintended consequences (that somehow feel easily avoidable). Justin’s struggling with his drug addiction, Alex is still struggling with physical therapy (and perhaps a crush on Zach?), and Jessica’s seemingly found herself in the midst of a love triangle with both of her exes. Oh, and Bryce’s girlfriend (ex?) Chloe is apparently pregnant now, and Tyler is definitely going to be struggling with the aftermath of both physical and sexual assault. Still, I can’t imagine there’s a ton of places this next season can go without feeling like a bit too much. Now that Hannah’s story is over and done and Katherine Langford has left the franchise behind, my interest has waned.

But there are plenty of fans who will be excited by the news, so I’ll leave you with this: you’ll get 13 new episodes of the show in 2019. You’re welcome.
