20 Celebrities Who’ve Had Terrifying Real-Life Encounters With Ghosts

By

1. Kat Dennings

In an interview with the AV Club, Dennings admitted she’d grown up in a severely haunted house in Philadelphia. “I mean, it’s just—some crazy shit went down in there at some point,” Dennings said of the house, which was built in 1694. “It’s also a place where William Penn used to come and stay all the time. There was some crazy horror-movie tropes that did happen, like lights would go on and off, things would fly across the room. It sounds so crazy, but I swear—you could ask my father, who is 89 who saw some shit. We all saw some shit.”

2. Cher

Cher definitely believes in ghosts, but unlike most people, she loves them. In a Reddit AMA, she admitted, “I actually think that Sonny makes a light go on. I have a beautiful chandelier that he makes the light go on when it is impossible, there is no power on. I love ghosts, I prefer ghosts to some people.”

3. Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson definitely has a “girl next door” look to her — you know, if the girl next door saw some freaky ass shit. During a 2014 interview with the Chatty Man Show, Hudson said both she and her mom, Goldie Hawn, “can see dead people.”

4. Jessica Alba

In 2008, Alba claimed she was attacked by a ghost when she was 17. She told her harrowing ghost story to the press:

“I had no idea what it was. I felt this pressure and I couldn’t get up, I couldn’t scream, I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t do anything. Something definitely took the covers off me and I definitely couldn’t get off the bed, and then, once I did, I screamed, ran to my parents’ room and I don’t think I spent many nights in that house ever again! There was definitely something in my parents’ old house – I don’t know what it was. I can’t really explain it. But they got it blessed and they burned sage and stuff since then.”

5. Lucy Hale

For some reason, it just seems natural that the Pretty Little Liars star is on this list. According to Hale, her house is actually haunted: “Doors close, not slam, but they close. And I have a motion sensor that lights up in my apartment  and I swear it lights up sometimes when there’s nothing under it. And my dog barks a lot. I don’t feel threatened, that threatened, but it definitely freak me out.”

6. Megan Fox

One thing you may not know about Megan Fox is this: she loves weird shit. Unsurprisingly, she had her own ghost story to tell MTV:

“I’ve heard ghosts. I was just in Mexico at my hotel [. . .] and at 7 am — I had pre-ordered breakfast for 7:30 am — I heard them come in with the little table, I heard them pouring coffee and I thought ‘Ugh, I’m not going to get up for another 30 minutes and my coffee is going to be cold. That sucks.’ So I get up 30 minutes later, no coffee, no table, no nothing. I heard the doorbell ring, I answer the door, it’s room service with my food, they bring it in. I turn around and all the bedroom lights are on and I’m like, you know what, I’m delirious, I’ve been traveling, drink your coffee. Brandy the nanny comes in later and she’s like, ‘Why did room service come in at 7 when we told them to come in at 7:30?’ So you can’t tell me I’m crazy because two people heard it.”

7. Ariana Grande

While Ariana Grande was in Kansas City, she decided to take a trip to Stull Cemetery, which is rumored to be one of the seven gates to Hell on Earth. While this hasn’t yet been proven, Grande’s experience there sure sounds about right:

“I felt this sick, overwhelming feeling of negativity over the whole car and we smelled sulfur, which is the sign of a demon . . . I was like, ‘This is scary, let’s leave.’ I rolled down the window before we left and said, ‘We apologize. We didn’t mean to disrupt your peace.’ Then I took a picture and there are three super distinct faces in the picture—they’re faces of textbook demons.”

8. Lorde

Lorde once claimed that ghosts were making it hard for her to make music. She tweeted, “Ghosts in the studio don’t want us to record tonight, they leaving their ghost hum on everything. buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz” Unfortunately, the tweet was deleted during one of her recent social media purges.

9. Laura Linney

Laura Linney wasn’t a believer until she had her own run-in with a ghost at the famously-haunted Belasco Theater on Broadway. Linney detailed her experience on The Late Late Show:

“I was not a believer. I had been told about the ghosts at the Belasco …There was a mysterious death of a chorus girl [at the theater]. Legend is that final dress rehearsals, that’s when the ghosts come out. I had forgotten this, and I was doing a play with Jane Alexander, and I turned to Jane Alexander, and I looked up to the upper balcony — there are two balconies there — and the upper balcony you can only get in from the outside, and those doors were locked; and I looked up, and there was a woman standing in the front row looking over with a blue dress and blonde hair. I just thought, ‘Well, hello!’ I looked back at Jane, and I looked back up, and she was gone… I went to the house manager and I said, ‘Joe, I think I saw a ghost.’ And he went, ‘male or female?’ I said, ‘female.’ And he went, ‘blue dress, blonde hair?’”

11. Miley Cyrus

There’s no way in hell Miley Cyrus doesn’t believe in ghosts. At least, not after she stayed in one terrifying rental apartment in London. She told Elle UK:

“It was seriously so terrifying … I was having really crazy dreams and really scary things, and one night my little sister – it sounds crazy to tell you – but she was standing in the shower and all of a sudden I hear her scream. I run in there and the water had somehow flipped to hot but it was still… It wasn’t like the water had just changed, the knob had turned but she hadn’t turned it and it was burning her. She was really red,” the star said. “Before I felt this, I thought I had seen a little boy sitting on the sink watching me take a shower so I felt really freaked out.”

12. Carrie Fisher

Why am I not surprised that Carrie Fisher had a ghost story of her own? The Star Wars star explained that her house was haunted by the late Republican strategist R. Gregory Stevens: “Lights would go on and off, and I had this toy machine, that when you touched it would say, ‘F*ck you! Eat sh*t! You’re an *sshole!’ And it would go off in the night, by itself, in my closet. I was a nut for a year, and in that year I took drugs again.”

13. Kesha

Back in 2012, Kesha claimed she’d had sex with a ghost before. ““I had a couple of experiences with the supernatural. I don’t know his name! He was a ghost! I’m very open to it.”

14. Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves was only 6 or 7 when he saw something strange in his family’s new apartment in NYC: “All of a sudden we are looking at [the doorway] and this jacket comes waving through the doorway. Just an empty jacket, there’s no head, there’s no body, there’s no legs, it’s just there and then it disappears. And I was a little kid so I was like, ‘OK well that’s interesting.'”

15. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato revealed in a Buzzfeed piece that she 100% believed in the paranormal, thanks to some creepy shit she saw growing up:

“I go ghost hunting. My house in Texas is so ridiculously haunted. Not by a bad spirit, but a little girl. I think her name is Emily. I’ve had a medium come over and ghost hunters, and they both told me the same name, Emily. There were so many times that I saw her when I was growing up. I saw her in my closet one time. When I was 3 years old my mom caught me talking to something by myself. She asked, “Who are you talking to?” and I said, “My best friend Emily.” She’s playful. She’d probably be around 11 or 12 years old, maybe younger.

One of my friends, Tucker, came over one time and he asked, “So your house is haunted?” I said, “Yeah, just watch. Something will happen. Something always happens.” We started to watch a movie when all of a sudden a laptop in my kitchen started to play a movie also. It was a black screen before, so it was a question of who turned it on and hit play. And after that Tucker texted a friend saying, “I think this house is haunted, a movie just turned on by itself,” and there was a “glitch” in his phone that kept texting him back the word “definitely” over and over again. That happened about 30 times.

There was another time when my uncle was in the living room watching TV and a balloon came down the stairs and turned around on the bannister. I have crazy footage of just orbs flying through the air… It’s crazy stuff.”

16. Jenna Bush-Hager

The former first daughter is proof that the White House is full of strange, mysterious ghosts. She detailed one particular experience on The Tonight Show: “I was asleep, there was a fireplace in my room and all of a sudden I heard 1920’s music coming out. I could feel it. I freaked out and ran into my sister’s room. She was like, ‘Please go back to sleep, this is ridiculous.’”

17. Matthew McConaughey

In 2009, Matthew McConaughey claimed his house was apparently once haunted by a spirit who went by the name of Madame Blu, but that he managed to make her leave:

“I was not even under the influence and she was there. She wasn’t that happy, it didn’t seem like she was going to be much fun to hang around or have in my house, so I went ahead and stood my ground. I opened the door and said ‘You can move around all you want but I’m not going anywhere.’ For weeks everyone that came to the house said the same thing: ‘There’s someone down in that hall, there’s somebody down in that hall.’”

18. Alyson Hannigan

Alyson Hannigan and husband Alexis Denisof aren’t new to the ideas of ghosts. In fact, the pair lived in a haunted house in LA, according to Hannigan: “I have a ghost in my house … I don’t know why he’s there. But he’s very friendly,” the actress said. “I saw this silhouette of a man standing in the bathroom doorway. I was like, ‘Sweetie, what are you doing?’ I thought it was Alexis. But then I looked and Alexis was asleep next to me.”

19. Nicholas Cage

I am 100% not surprised to see Nicholas Cage on this list. Apparently the actor once owned LaLaurie Mansion, which is said to be one of the most haunted house in New Orleans and was once owned by a socialite who reportedly tortured slaves. “Some people have beachfront property, I have ghost-front property,” the actor joked.

2o. Peter Jackson

The Hobbit director apparently had a pretty harrowing experience that made him a believer of the supernatural pretty quickly. He was filming Lord of the Rings in the ’90s when something strange happened in his hotel room: “One night I woke up and there was a figure in the room… She was really scary – her face was like a silent scream. She glided across the room and disappeared into the wall.” Later, when he told his wife about it, she said, “Was it the woman with a screaming face?”
