Princess Charlotte Just Made Royal History As She Welcomed Her Baby Brother To The World

By

Royal family fanatics are going to have a great next few weeks starting today. This morning, Kate Middleton gave birth to her third child, a son whose name has yet to be released, and in a few weeks, Prince Harry and Megan Markle will tie the knot at Windsor Castle. Let’s just say it must be a busy time at Kensington Palace.

It’s also pretty cool because Princess Charlotte, William and Kate’s second child, inadvertently made history when her baby brother was born. Princess Charlotte will be the first princess whose position in the succession of the crown won’t be be affected by a younger male sibling’s birth, thanks to the Succession to the Crown Act 2014. The law states:

In determining the succession to the Crown, the gender of a person born after 28 October 2011 does not give that person, or that person’s descendants, precedence over any other person (whenever born).

This is a huge deal, considering monarchies all around the world have shafted women as leaders in favor of their younger male siblings throughout history. This has been changing slowly throughout the world (Sweden passed their own version of the law in 1980), and it’s a huge deal to have the British monarchy follow suit. Gender equality for the win!

Of course, Charlotte probably won’t understand the importance of this until she’s much older. For right now, it’s more than likely that she’s just excited to welcome a new brother into the world. Congrats to the royal family!
