Planet Money built a handy thing that takes data from a recent government news release to compare the median wages of 365 American cities and adjust them to take into account the cities’ cost of living. What comes out is the actual purchasing power of the city’s median wage.

Basically, if you’re a resident of Washington DC, San Francisco, or New York City, don’t look unless you feel like killing yourself today (or moving to Rochester, MN, which after adjusting for cost of living has the highest median wage in the United States).

Check it out and find out what the median cost of living actually feels like in your city over at Planet Money.
