Holy Shit: Saudi Arabia to Build Mile-High Skyscraper

Wow. According to Gizmodo via The Daily, the Saudis plan on building a skyscraper that will be one mile high. Expected to cost upwards of $30 billion, the tallest-structure-in-the-world-to-be will house a giant hotel, office space and apartments in the Saudi city of Jeddah. It will take a 12-minute elevator ride to ascend to the very top.

Here’s a video of the architecture exhibit in which plans for the structure were (apparently) first unveiled:

The current tallest building in the word is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which reaches 2,700 feet (under half of the proposed Saudi building). But I gotta ask – like, how are they going to clean the windows on that thing? And, what’s next – a space elevator? TC mark

True story: I met a guy who was working on this project through a Chicago architectural firm. He said, at that point, they didn't have enough things to put in it, for its height – so the top x number of stories were going to be completely empty.

When you put it like that, I have to wonder how long the elevator ride would take.

I tried to get him to suggest to the royal family that they offer to store process uranium from Iran, but the two countries aren't on the greatest of terms.

Alright everyone – I see it says 1 KM (1 kilometer) in the video (that's just over .6 miles high). So it is 1 mile high NOT! Sorry!

    • Brandon

      one mile = 5280 feet

see this diagram in the daily, which shows the skyscraper at “5280 feet” – http://www.thedaily.com/page/2

      one mile = ~1.6 kilometers

see “gulf news” article which reports skyscraper to be “1.6 kilometers” – http://gulfnews.com/business/p

in conclusion there seems to be mixed information regarding the height of the building
