1. Keep a personal journal or write a blog. Writing will help you recognize your true feelings, which is important for initiating change or personal growth.

2. Never go to a cuffs and fifths party with someone you barely know because you might have to watch them pee and they might have to watch you pee and you’ll be the most uncomfortable you can possibly be.

3. I’m absolutely blessed to be able to live on the top floor of my building in the corner room of my floor because I can’t hear anyone having sex above me, I’m the farthest away from the RA, and my view is TO DIE FOR.

4. Convince your parents to get a single room because you will need the privacy more than you think you do and being alone is very therapeutic.

5. Get a Brita because your college town may have tap water that tastes like metal and you need to filter that out if you don’t want to cringe every time you drink it.

6. Take advantage of your school’s gym because the “freshman fifteen” is real and working out will flood your body with endorphins, making you happy.

7. Leave your doors open the first few weeks of school when you can or go knock on random doors. That’s how you meet people quickly and form some of your closest friends your first year.

8. People that you meet throughout the semester don’t always stick around and that’s okay. They become busy and move on.

9. The friends you have are your either friends for a reason, friends for a season, or friends for life.

10. Don’t be afraid to experience something new. You’ll find out what you like and what you don’t like.

11. It’s okay to change what you like and don’t like. Also, don’t let people shame you for your likes and dislikes.

12. Make an effort to get to know people in your classes and form study groups. Studying in groups is more effective and you’re likely to do better in school.

13. Don’t bring money when you go out fratting because you will get the drunchies and spend all of it at your school’s 24-hour Mexican restaurant.

14. If you frequently fight with your family members, your relationships will get better with some time apart. Also, take the time to call them and ask how they’re doing.

15. Don’t change your morals just because you’re under the influence. You’re likely to regret the decisions you make when you’re inebriated.

16. Hookup culture is not for everyone and you don’t need to hook up with someone to know that.

17. Stop comparing people to your last boyfriend or girlfriend. You’ll be so picky you’ll close your heart off to new people.

18. “Due tomorrow? Do tomorrow.” is a terrible philosophy because the quality of the work you’ll be turning will degrade and pretty soon it’ll happen with every assignment you’re turning in.

19. Don’t commit to an organization or hobby you’re not in love with, especially if you have to pay to participate.

20. Stand up for yourself and don’t let anyone push you around. You’ll become an insecure push over and people will take advantage of you. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
