I’m A Sucker For Apologies

By

Words can be beautiful, words can be dangerous. Words can be defining, words can be poison.

Being an impulsive risk-taker that I am, I fall in love with words as quickly as I fall out of them. Like many of us do, we all have those moments whereby the people around us have altered our thoughts, our actions, or our decisions in some ways or another just by telling us what we wanted to hear.

They climbed over our walls we’ve barricaded our hearts with just through their words in a matter of seconds. Did you know? The worst words ever used are those aligned with apologies.

I know I’m not the only one out there on this earth that gets soft whenever humans used the word, “Sorry.”

“It’s my fault.”

“Please forgive me.”

As little and small as these words are, surprisingly, they do pack an emotional punch to ourselves. That’s all it takes. All those anger, those emotions of hatred, sense of disappointments can all be taken away with just those few words.

Countless times I’ve walked up to my friends, cussing them and even wanting to throw a punch. Countless times I’ve lost my reason behind wanting to do so just by hearing their apology. Even if the very same people hurt you over and over again after their meaningless sorries.

Call me a sucker for apologies, but that’s just me.

I’ll gladly be at the shorter end of the stick.

Some say people do change, some say they can never change their spots. Who can tell?

Suckers like us, we like to believe in the idea there’s something more than just apologies.

I’ll always remember what Paul Boese used to say,

“Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.”

I guess I have to apologize for being a sucker.
