1. “You’re not alone in this.”
Even if you don’t have personal firsthand experience with depression, reminding your friend that other people out there do understand what they’re going through can be hugely helpful. Depression is an isolating beast. It’s important they remember they aren’t alone in how they feel.
2. “I’m here for you.”
It’s one of the simplest and most powerful things you can tell someone. It soothes the fear that you’re going to abandon them. You love them, and that means you aren’t going anywhere.
3. “You are important to me.”
Sometimes the best thing in the world is to just know one person out there sees and values you.
4. “What you feel is valid.”
Depression is not an exaggeration. Depression is a very real and painful disorder. In addition to dealing with depression, people who suffer often have to deal with ignorant outside assumptions/stigmas. Telling your friend that what they feel is valid and important can feel like a sigh of relief.
5. “Let me know if I can help.”
They might not be receptive to it. Some people retreat and prefer to be alone. But you’ll never know unless you offer your help.
6. “I care about you.”
Most of the time, they just want to know someone cares.
