Please Don’t Fall In Love

By

Do not fall in love, or you will spend so many sleepless nights waiting by the phone that will not ring; and you will spend many sleepless nights staring at the ceiling, wondering if they are thinking of you too.

Do not fall in love, or you will start to question the importance of everything else you thought you loved. Those things still matter, just not as much because your heart has no more space in which to hold them.

Do not fall in love, or doing normal things will get so much harder. You will try to write an essay, but your mind will be on what they look like when they smile. You will try to watch a movie, but the love story will be much too much to handle. You will try to do anything you used to do, but your brain doesn’t work the same.

Do not fall in love, because the possibilities of what might happen will terrify you beyond speakable terms. You could be left behind, or thrown away. You could be treated like nothing. You could hurt so badly, and they could not love you back.

Do not fall in love, or you will expose your heart while it is still bleeding, hoping and trusting that they will press their hands gently against your chest and stem the violent flow.

Do not fall in love, or you will find yourself daydreaming on the most mundane times of the day. You will imagine yourself running away with The One, sweeping you off your feet like you’ve never been swept before, and you will realize that you believe in happy endings after all.

Do not fall in love, or you will crave the warmth of their hands on your skin, and you will recognize that there is no other person in this world whose embrace you would gladly run to. You will long for their lips on yours, and realize that it’s your only way to know satisfaction.

Do not fall in love, because even logic would appear irrational. You’ll overlook the red flags waving, and ignore the voice at the back of your head that’s telling you to stop. You’ll choose your heart, that damned thing, and trust that you can overcome it. Even though you probably can’t.

Do not fall in love, or you will set aside the things that once made you happy. You will try to convince yourself that staying at home on a Saturday night is better than hanging out with your friends at the pub down the corner, just so you can squeeze yourself in on their busy schedule.

Do not fall in love, or you will find yourself constantly waiting for the perfect moment. That moment when you can finally say “I love you”, but you’re afraid that these words might just fall out of your mouth all by themselves and ruin everything you’ve ever worked for.

So I am begging you, do not fall in love…

Unless it’s with me.
