Some of us, just like me, are out searching for how we can look in the mirror and feel confident about the woman staring back.
Now, don’t get me wrong, the people God places in your life are definitely significant (I will talk about this later), but that alone can not determine our self worth. A lot of women tend to place their self worth in the hands of men (men also do this with women), and sometimes it is not always safe there.
Feeling beautiful, and I mean truly feeling empowered in your own body has everything to do with finding where your soul belongs.
I started taking note of the moments where I felt most content, where I felt powerful, beautiful and whole.
Here are some of the things that make me feel beautiful on a daily basis,
There is nothing that makes me feel more beautiful than God’s love for me. And the Bible reminds me just how amazing God thinks I am. I began reading the Bible in depth rather recently, and I could not believe the overwhelming amount of self-love I developed by understanding why God created ME.
The Bible says, “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare to her”. Proverbs 3:13-15 (NIV)
The Bible is saying that one who seeks wisdom, who seeks to know God and God’s purpose for them is more precious than any other earthly desire. Happy are those who live a life full of Godly wisdom.
2. Not Comparing Myself To Others
Easier said than done, right? It is human nature for us to look around and compare ourselves physically to other women. It gets even deeper than that though…
Do you follow those “super moms” on social media or the adventurists that travel to like three different places a month and post really cool pictures on mountain tops or in the middle of an ocean somewhere? Yup, me too!
Although women on social media can be inspirational, comparing your life to someone else’s can also be really discouraging.
I decided to be grateful who I am and what I do have.
Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart…”
I use this verse as a constant reminder that I was put on this Earth for a reason. My life was meant for me, not for someone else. It is so silly for me to envy someone else’s life because it was never intended for me in the first place. God has a plan for me, maybe I am in a rough part of that plan right now; but His goal was never to see me fail. My faithfulness will get me where I need to be eventually, and I am just fine with that!
3. Taking care of myself, for myself.
Who ever said “a woman who cuts her hair is about to change her life”, was dead on! Taking care of yourself physically is just as important as taking care of yourself emotionally. They go hand in hand, actually. When we feel good about ourselves physically, it naturally makes us happier emotionally.
Now, back to NOT comparing yourself to others. Taking care of yourself should be FOR YOU. Not for anyone else, or to look more like that make-up guru you follow on Instagram.
I’m talking about the beautiful you feel when YOU look in the mirror. The haircut you get because it makes you feel more powerful, the eyeshadow color you choose because it expresses your mood. It’s all about YOUR soul, girl!
No one can take your beauty from you, because no one else has YOUR beauty.
4. My Girlfriends
Remember what I said about people having a significant role in your life?
Take a look at your group of friends. You are all very different women. Now, the question is, are each of you adding something of value to the pack? Do you lift each other up? Can you rely on them?
It took me a very long time to have a solid group of friends. And to be honest, not all of them are even friends with each other. But, each of them adds something significant to my life that I would not have otherwise. Each of my girlfriends has taught me something new about myself during their time in my life. This is so important.
My friends make me feel beautiful because they reveal the beauty within me I did not know I had. My friends make me feel beautiful, because THEY are beautiful women themselves.
I have a friend I turn to whenever I need artistic inspiration. A friend who inspires me to push harder in my career and follow my dreams. A friend who motivates me to be a better mother. I have a friend who’s passionate and honest about everything, she usually calls me out on my wrongs.
Bottom line, when I end a conversation with each of these women, I leave it feeling more powerful and more secure. That is a pretty darn beautiful part of my life!
I saved this for last, not because of importance, but because maybe not everyone reading this can relate.
If you have yet to experience this wonderful part of life, trust me when I say, it is something you definitely have to look forward to in your future. My son makes me feel more beautiful than anyone else on this earth could.
Motherhood is TOUGH, and usually we don’t take time to observe how they look at us when we’re doing our hair in the morning or hard at work doing the dishes.
But, if you ever get the chance to glance over at their eyes when you are busy being “Mom”, they are amazed by us.
Everything that we do is amazing to our children, they think we are the most beautiful women on earth. Every day my son watches me, and everyday he learns something new about himself because of me. Wow! I think that makes us pretty darn important!
Motherhood may not feel very pretty. The majority of the time, it’s sticky and messy, usually loud and chaotic. But I promise you, if you want to feel loved, take a second and look into the eyes into your beautiful baby. It’s pretty overwhelming.
So, my challenge to you:
For the next couple days, take note of the things that make you feel the most beautiful. What are you doing? Who are you with?
And make those things a habit. Place those “happy things” in different aspects of your life. Understand all the negative stuff does not matter, it is not adding any value to your life so why dwell on it?
Let’s move forward, let’s renew, let’s feel beautiful (without being told).
“Whoever gets sense loves his own soul; he who keeps understanding will discover good” Proverbs 19:8
