New Year, New Perspective

As another year comes to a close, the slogan “New Year, New Me” and the typical resolutions clutter our social media newsfeeds once again. A lot can happen in 365 days, and this is the traditional time to reflect on the good, the bad, the everything.

“New Year, New Me” does not sit well with me. The words suggest that there was something wrong with the person we were last year. While the New Year should encourage us to become the best version of ourselves, we must shake off the desire to live a life in perfect detail.

Time and time again, New Year’s resolutions are unsuccessful because they do not provide us with immediate gratification like a new this or that does. If we are too ambitious with our goals, achieving success is that much more difficult – and it is easy to feel discouraged when things do not change overnight.

Let the New Year allow you to adjust with moderate, realistic goals.

Start 2017 with the slogan “New Year, New Perspective.”

In 2017, accept every failure, every heartache and every tear. Failures prove that you did not let fear get in your way – at least you are doing something to better yourself. Accept that even though life can be harsh, it can also be kind. Forgive yourself for what you do not get right – for the challenges you just couldn’t face. In order to become the best version of ourselves, we must let go and just live.

Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone. Let yourself make mistakes and learn from them. Let go of the words you said and let go of the words you didn’t say. Take chances, big ones and little ones. Challenge yourself in more ways than one and create memories.

Go the extra mile for yourself because you deserve it. Set personal goals. Evaluate what you like about your life and what you wish was different. Change it, do it. Don’t wait – life just might pass you by.

Above all, do what makes you happy. Your happiness is important. Find the little things that make you smile and keep doing them. Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed. Never surrender your happiness. Do things that inspire you to live your best life – not things that drain you instead of fulfill you.

The life you lead this year is determined by the choices YOU make, good or bad. Don’t lose sight of yourself. Do what you love and don’t stop.

Live better and more fully in 2017 – for real this year. This is the year of you. Thought Catalog Logo Mark
