To The Friends We Lose In Life

I think nobody ever knows what happens when friends break up. It probably hurts to think about all the times you guys texted each other, or when they were the first person you called when you were sad. There are also the numerous times you laughed so hard you couldn’t breathe. Those are the moments that bring tears to your eyes every time you think about it.

The best of friends stumble into our life when we least expect it, and they have such a big impact on us that it’s hard to forget them.

They made you laugh, they made you cry, they were there to comfort you and insult the boy who treated you badly but then at one point, something changed. They changed or maybe you changed; maybe you got into a new relationship, or they did, maybe you started a new job or maybe they wanted to meet new people. A lot of things changed in a matter of time and caused a rift between you.

Sometimes it’s a slow fade. You are not the first person they text anymore. They go out with different people and thought you were busy, that’s why they didn’t invite you. You keep seeing pictures of them at events you never knew about. That’s when you slowly realize you are being replaced.

In some other cases, there was a misunderstanding that turned into a big fight, too big for things to get better. Maybe you wanted to fix things, and they didn’t because never talking to you again is easier than sitting down to tell you why they’re breaking up the friendship.

Losing a friend is tough, don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s not. It’s like a breakup. Personally, it blindsided me, my boyfriend at the time broke up with me, and my best friend took his side for reasons I’ll never know. I couldn’t see her, I couldn’t text her and I couldn’t call her my best friend anymore. At first, I was in shock, so I didn’t feel anything but then I realized that I didn’t have THAT person anymore. I got a new job, and I couldn’t tell her, I saw this funny meme and I couldn’t send her. I met a new guy, and I couldn’t tell her. She burned the bridge between us.

When the friendship breakup hits you, that’s when you finally realize the void they left inside you, even if they were not the greatest of friends, they were important to you and it’s normal to miss them. Now, you’re probably wondering if you’re going to find a friend like them again, you’re wondering if you’ll find someone like them; someone that makes you laugh, someone that’s always ready to hang out and someone that makes you feel safe. The answer is yes—there will be someone new that will come into your life; not the same friend, but a new one that will give you hope about friendship. Every time someone leaves, life replaces them.

To the friends we lose along the way, don’t wish them harm, wish them well and wish them to light up somebody else’s life like they did with yours.
