If You Haven’t Heard It Lately, I’m Proud Of You

Some people grow up in environments where they hear the words “I’m proud of you” as often as they hear “hello”. Others grow up only hearing from afar as they’re being said to someone else.

Life is full of things that make people proud of us. They’re usually the big milestones like getting married, graduating, getting promoted, or becoming a parent. Other times we hear those words for more token victories like tests passed, goals scored, or prizes awarded. But often the times those words are uttered are few and far between. And sometimes, it is just nice to hear.

So, in case you need to hear it, I’m proud of you.

Life is tough. Adulting can suck. I’m proud of you for going to that thankless job you hate just to pay bills. I’m proud of you for doing what you have to in order to make ends meet.

Emotions are overwhelming and depression/anxiety is real. Some days getting out of bed is the toughest thing you have to do. I’m proud of you for doing, for mustering every ounce of strength and energy from within to get up and simply make it through they.

I’m proud of you for ending toxic relationships and crappy friendships. I’m proud of you for realizing your worth and not accepting anything less.

I’m proud of you for the small victories others may think trivial. I’m proud of you for those sober days, for the day you managed to make it to the gym, for the healthy meal you finally ate instead of pizza and tacos. I’m proud of you for steps you’ve taken to improve yourself and your life, big and small.

When it seems like life is rough and the glass is always half empty, remember someone is proud of you. And you should be proud of yourself as well.
