Jealousy turns people into assholes, and our current social climate feeds off the inherent need to not only be part of the tribe and to belong, but also to dominate and control it.
What makes you jealous??
I can’t say that this exercise is flawless or that it magically cured me of my jealousy. It’s not supposed to. It’s an exercise—a tool to use when envy appears.
It’s one thing to be held in the thrall of a dead genius. The space created by death still allows for self-delusion—another ten years and I’ll be able to do that—but it’s another thing to realize belatedly that you have rubbed shoulders with genius, cleaned kitchens together and stayed up until 2:00 in the morning discussing spoons.
See, I’ve got a theory, and it’s that we’re all possessed by this need to be special, to be different – to matter so much to the person we choose to be with that we eclipse all that came before and all who will come after.
