The 5 Women You Become Post-Breakup

By

You fell in love. You allowed your heart to lead you astray. You allowed your heart to keep you up at night texting him, to keep you connecting song lyrics to your relationship and, ultimately, to let you down and keep you from becoming whole again.
But then something amazing happened. You got tired of waiting around for an apology from him and wasting around while watching Gilmore Girls in bed, and decided to change instead. You decided to become the woman you truly wanted to be. The complete package that will turn heads and break hearts.
They say that it’s always darkest before the dawn, and they’re completely right…So here are the 5 brand new women I became (and you can too) after my darkest time.

1. The Workaholic.

You Better Work Bitch!
– Britney

Nothing served as a better distraction from my emotional state post-break up than my job. I threw myself into every assignment. I made it a point to be “butt-in-seat” at 9:00 AM each day and to drive home only when my To-Do post-it was in the trash. My work ethic was applauded, my deliverables were met and my iPhone remained unchecked in my desk drawer for hours. I became the boss-ass-business-bitch I never had time to be and it felt so powerful.

2. The Thrill-Seeker.

If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try.
– Seth Godin

I might have scared him when, after one week of dating, I invited him to drive up to Savannah with me for a weekend. What he did not know however, was that my spontaneity goes way beyond an unplanned day trip. He said yes, with hesitation, but it was one of the best weekends we had together. I refuse to let our break up take away my thirst for a good thrill. If it sounds exciting, chances are I will do it. That will continue to be my rationale: book now, think later.

3. The Flirt.

Keep your heels, head, and standards high.
– Unknown

I am and always will be the fiercely loyal type. I’ve learned that my loyalty comes at a price of self-sacrifice because the definition of loyalty seems to differ by gender. Now that I do not owe my loyalty to a significant other, I am free to text who I choose, go out with who I choose and share my number with who I choose. My singledom has now become a choice — not a result — and I will relish it for as long as possible.

4. The Hippie.

The Earth has music for those who listen.
– Shakespeare

Toes buried in the grass, Iron & Wine playlist on repeat and iced chai in hand…that is when I’m happiest. It is amazing the amount of free time that Single Me now has and I choose to spend as much of it as possible outdoors. Whether I am picking up a book for the first time in years at the park or dodging between cars downtown, I’ve become more in tune with my surroundings.

5. The Health Nut.

You are what you eat, so don’t be cheap, fast, or easy.
– Unknown

Someone who loves you just the way you are does not push you to be the best possible version of yourself. I became my own coach, bought my own kale, made my own trail mix, and chugged my own damn lemon & cucumber water. For once my health and fitness goals lasted beyond a week because for once they were for me and not to impress someone else. It was out with the Ben & Jerry’s and in with the quinoa and berries, and it felt so good.
