Any Which Way You Can, that movie that paired Clint Eastwood with a chimp, wasn’t exactly a masterpiece, but next to Ed, it looks like King Kong. Ed is the movie that found a perfect foil for Matt LeBlanc’s acting talents by pairing him with a creepy chimp, played in various scenes by an animatronic puppet and men in suits. It should be a horror film, but instead it’s a wacky opposites-attract comedy, like The Odd Couple but with a monkey hogging the bathroom.

The movie is about a baseball team who gets a wily chimp for a star player, and everyone knows it’s shit. LeBlanc looks perpetually flummoxed in every shot, as if he doesn’t know how he ended up here. Even the camera looks unsure of what’s going, giving the movie a strange dizzying quality. While watching Ed, you feel like you must be on drugs, but this is real life.
