I’m only a college freshman, but I’ve reached out for enough in my 17 years to have experienced my hefty share of “no”s, “you’re unqualified”s, and (worst of all) “we appreciate you taking the time to apply, but we are unable to offer you a position at this time”s.

Most importantly, don’t take it personally. For most of us, and certainly in my decidedly entry-level experience, they didn’t dislike my resume – they just trashed it without reading it, as they did for 99% of the pile. Now what? As Steve Martin says, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.”

Relationship rejection is a totally different animal; in fact, I’d say it’s a big, scary, carnivorous animal. My advice there would be to run away really fast.
