5. She comes up to me and slides me her number on a piece of paper and says ‘call me.’

“At work, she worked there also. I was having lunch with my dad at my work and she comes up to me and slides me her number on a piece of paper and says ‘call me.’ My dad just looked at me with proud eyes like I had just won the lottery. I did. That was 17 years ago, we have been married 11 years.”

6. He asked to borrow my pen, I told him ‘only if you write down your number.’

“We’re both introverts, but I definitely can force myself to be bold. I was a waitress at a restaurant he came into. He asked to borrow my pen, I told him ‘only if you write down your number.’

Sometimes introvert guys need a girl who is not afraid to make the first move. We’ve been together almost 14 years now.”

7. I realized she was flirting with me and I started flirting back.

“Both of us work at a grocery store. I saw her and thought that she was the cutest there but never really did anything about it. She works as a cashier and I work in produce. She would always do the re-shop and I soon realized that she was doing that for a reason and started flirting with her back. We have been together 11 months now.”

9. I saw her at Comic Con and spent the day with her.

“In a drama class in senior year, never talked much till after graduation then I saw her at Comic Con and spent the day with her. Ended up kissing before we left and 4 years later we’re getting married in 5 months.”

10. I said in my dating profile that it would take a bold woman to get me to open up.

“I met my wife on OKCupid, after much coaxing by friends to give online dating a shot. I’m a quiet, shy, introvert who takes quite a while to warm up to people and I told outright in my profile that it would take a bold woman to get me to open up. One definitely found me. Despite me only searching for someone locally.”

11. My good friend Al. Cohol.

“My good friend Al. Cohol. Had a lot to do with it. She is super-hot but very strange. Strange to a point where she thinks she is difficult to love. It is her M.O. Her family will contest. But I broke through. We are a lot alike. And now married with two kids.”

12. She (raging extrovert) was one person over from me and I (raging introvert) couldn’t take my eyes off of her.

“We were in the Army and both off our supervisors told us that we needed to attend a formal event.

She (raging extrovert) was one person over from me and I (raging introvert) couldn’t take my eyes off of her.

Got the nerve up to ask for her number. We married 6 months later. That was 29 years ago next week.”

13. My now wife had lived next door to me and came over to ask for some sugar for baking.

“My now wife had lived next door to me and came over to ask for some sugar for baking. We had never met before that, she only knew the house next door was single guys renting. I gave her some sugar and the next day she left a cheesecake at my doorstep as a thanks. I had to return the Tupperware. I later found out she had lots of sugar in the house.”

14. I said a prayer to God.

“Back in high school, we both worked in the library. I had a lot of tough classes and did research at the local university so I did not have any free time that semester. I was so overwhelmed that I prayed something along the lines of “God, I have so much to do and no time to pursue a relationship; if there’s someone I am supposed to be with, then just make it obvious like have her tackle me or something.”

So first day back from winter break, I am shelving media in the library and I glance up and see my coworker at the door. I wave and go back to shelving and then wham!, I’m on the floor looking up at her laughing face. She apparently thought it would be funny to tackle hug me while I was obliviously putting stuff away. Later found out that she’d broken up with her boyfriend over the break, we started hanging out more, and eventually started dating.

We’ve been married for 12 years now.”

15. She messaged me first.

“I met my girlfriend (now wife) on a dating website. She messaged me first. I had a pretty detailed profile, but she says the two things that stood out to her were 1) I had attractive pictures and 2) I described my ideal woman, not a “girl” or a “female”

We talked online a bit before we met up. Had a great conversation over sushi, and the rest is history. I had never had a long-term relationship before, but this really was meant to be. She’s my best friend, and a wonderful person.”

16. I would wander around grocery stores because it helped me be less lonely.

“Not a dude, but DEFINITELY an introvert. Basically, I was living alone, never saw roommates, work was my only hobby. Was severely bulimic and severely depressed.

After work I would wander around grocery stores because it helped me be less lonely, and also I could decide which foods to binge/purge. Pretty pathetic. After a while of visiting one store in particular a dozen times over, one of the night cashiers began to recognize me–first by my work shirt, then by my face. After a few encounters he could remember my name. Then we began to talk, found out we are both computer/math/science nerds. Then we would go to the gym after he got off. I broke up with my at the time boyfriend (the relationship was dying anyways) and within a week we went to seeing each other every day, and texting when we couldn’t be together. It has been over 6 months, he moved into my place, and ever since we started seeing each other we have never gone more than 18 hours apart. As an introvert I’m always sick of people, always get tired of a person I spend time with, but with him, I never want to be away from him.”

17. She invited me to her house for Christmas.

“Girl I worked with found out I would be having Christmas by myself as my family lived out of state and I couldn’t get enough time off work. We didn’t really know each other very well but she invited me to her house for Christmas. We hit it off and two months later we were dating. 11 years later and 8 years of marriage we are still going strong. I do feel bad for her boyfriend though. She dumped him the day before we started dating.”

18. A mutual friend called to my attention she was into me (I was oblivious).

“After 4 years of no dating following a crushing breakup, a mutual friend called to my attention she was into me (I was oblivious). I didn’t know her very well, but I was ready to ‘try again.’ I wasn’t even sure I was very attracted to her but I figured it couldn’t hurt to go out on a date with a nice girl.

We hit it off, she’s pretty shy, which is why she said she’d never had had the courage to try to talk to me. In the course of the first date I’m slowly realizing ‘She’s amazing!’

Many years later, now we have two kids and there’s just a lot of love in our lives =D”

19. We met at the hospital while both of us were detoxing.

“After months of spending less than 20 minutes sober drove myself to a hospital for detox. Finally got up to the unit at about 1:00 am where I proceeded to be given a bunch of drugs to help me sleep and reduce the chances of a seizure. Woke up the next day for breakfast in my scrubs highly confused and there she was. She had been in detox a full day before me and this one allowed you to bring your own clothes and shit so she was dressed in her sweats.

For some odd ass reason she saw me, barely aware, unshowered for two-three months, and thought he looks hot. Proceeded to spend the next 7 days in a locked unit only talking. After which we both went to our separate treatments (detox was combined detox and counseling that specialized in getting people into treatment directly from the hospital). Only contact we had from then on was about 20 minutes total of phone time but we wrote letters to each other every day. It’s been almost 9 months now and we had very dark parts of our relationship where we both relapsed but now we are both over 3 months sober, focus on our individual recovery first. I couldn’t be happier I finally found my best friend who loves me for who I am and has helped me grow in so many areas. I know nobody is going to really read this but I want someone to see it so thank you to whoever does.”

20. She took the wine glass out of my hand, put it down, and leaned in for a kiss.

“She came over to me in a coffee shop while she was on vacation in my country, to ask how to tip. We had a two-hour conversation, and then an amazing five-hour lunch two days later.

She complained about her hostel and I offered her my spare bedroom. She accepted. Nothing happened although it seems crystal-clear in retrospect that we were falling for each other (duh). I didn’t want to be douchey and make her feel uncomfortable under my roof, so putting the moves on her was not something I seriously considered.

Two nights later, I had to be gone for most of the night, on a work assignment, and I asked if she would please watch and walk my dog in my absence. I came home at 5 a.m. and was greeted by my suddenly very soft, very fluffy dog. She had somehow understood “Will you please wash my dog,” and apparently didn’t find that a strange request at all.

The next evening, after we’d been talking over a bottle of wine for hours, it seems she’d had enough of my apparent indecisiveness, took the wine glass out of my hand, put it down, and leaned in for a kiss.

That was 26 years ago. We’ve been married 23 years.”

21. She came over and sat next to me and we started talking.

“On the Greyhound.

During my time in the Army I was stationed at Ft. Eustis, VA. On my way home (Denver, CO, at the time) for Christmas I saw her sitting across from and slightly behind me. Honestly, I didn’t pay much attention to her at first, but my buddy, seated next to her, did. After getting shot down repeatedly for a day and a half, he finally got off the bus. Shortly thereafter she came over and sat next to me and we started talking.

After that we got split up (put on different buses) and I kicked myself for not getting her number. Then, when the bus stopped in St. Louis, there she was standing right there in the entrance, almost like she was waiting for me. If my bus had arrived 15 minutes later I’d have never seen her again.

Then I found out the bus to Denver was delayed due to snow, and wasn’t going anywhere for at least two days. She hurried over to the ticket counter and had my ticket changed to Des Moines, IA (where she was going) so I wouldn’t be trapped in St. Louis for two days. We spent the next four days getting to know each other, then I continued home. We had a long-distance relationship for about six months until I came home permanently, by which time she had moved to Denver and rented an apartment.

We got married three years later and have been together 10 years total.”

22. I asked her if she wanted to catch up and play some music together.

“We’re both introverts, and as a result, it took a little while for us to actually become romantically involved—a little while being seven years.

She and I met when we were both eleven, when we were put together to compete in a music competition as a duet (we’re both cellists).

I had a little eleven-year-old crush on her straight away, and she had the same thing for me.

Neither of us ever told the other about our feelings for years, instead talking to our friends about it and then getting into other relationships and forgetting about each other for a while.

Eventually, after I broke up with my girlfriend of 3 years, I asked my now SO if she wanted to catch up and play some music together.

We saw each other for a few weeks in a row, and then, after seven years of on and off feelings for each other, we became a thing, and I am happier than I’ve ever been.”

23. My problem was always that I couldn’t tell if a girl was interested, and I could never tell when I was crossing the line from flirting to being creepy.

“I’m definitely a hardcore introvert, at least if you believe Myers-Briggs tests. But I’m not shy, don’t have anxiety or anything like that. Still, I always had confidence issues, and could never manage a cold open with a girl. Even with friends of friends that I liked, I found creative ways to fuck things up and make them horrifically awkward.

Met my wife on E-Harmony. Dated for 4 years, married for almost 5 now, just had our first kid. After talking online, we met at a bar, and just hit it off. Funny thing is, she’s WAY different than me. Much more extroverted. I’ve rubbed off on her a little, and she’s rubbed off on me a little.

For me, my problem was always that I couldn’t tell if a girl was interested, and I could never tell when I was crossing the line from flirting to being creepy. And I was never looking for anything casual. I wanted a relationship. By meeting a girl online, I knew she was interested, and looking for the same thing as me. So I didn’t get all in my own head about it, and I was free to just be myself. Did fine after that.”

24. For the first few hours I didn’t say a word to her then we moved to the next bar over.

“Went on a night out in Chester, was originally not gonna go because I’m not a fan of drinking but my best friend managed to convince me to go out, there were 6 of us 2 couples me and another girl. I’m really shy and find it difficult to talk to girls so for the first few hours I didn’t say a word to her then we moved to the next bar over. After about an hour in this bar my best friend’s girlfriend ran up the stairs and whispers something into his ear. He comes up to me and his exact words, ‘Listen Mike, all you have to do is talk to her, I’m not asking you to do rocket science just fucking talk to her,’ so I did and it started of small like how are you where do you work and it ended with me losing my virginity that night, still together after 2 months 🙂 shit story but oh well thought I’d share.”

25. At first she would just say hi passing by. Then she’d stop in for a few minutes. Slowly she’d hang out more often and longer.

“Introverted me in college was mostly hanging out in my room on the first floor.

She would come by with her friends to hang out with other guys living in the building.

At first she would just say hi passing by. Then she’d stop in for a few minutes. Slowly she’d hang out more often and longer.

People asked if we were dating. We both denied it at first, then realized oh wait, maybe we are.

Seventeen years later we are married with a child.

So I didn’t even have to leave my room to get a girl.”

26. I added her on Facebook rather than ask her for her number because I’m a coward.

“I met my fiancée on the first day of college completely by accident. I programmed my schedule into my phone but hadn’t accounted for daylight savings time. Therefore, I show up to my first class an hour earlier unknown to me. I had decided that I was going to make a real effort to put myself out there and be social so I sit near the front of the lecture hall. I’d shown up with plenty of time before class (which was an hour earlier than my real class). Me and these four-other people start talking about where we’re from and stuff like that. They’re all freshmen too and I’m really stoked because it’s before the first class even and I’ve found a group of friends to hang out with. One of these people is this gorgeous girl in the row ahead of me and I fall in love with her the first time she turns around and asks me my name. Right before class we decide to all get lunch at one of the dining halls later at a specified time. About 15 minutes into the class it becomes really obvious that I’m not in the last class. I go to my schedule and online and realize that my entire schedule in my phone is an hour early. I’m too embarrassed to stand up and leave at this point so I just stay.

I almost didn’t go to lunch when and where we agreed upon because I thought it would be embarrassing, but I thought there was a chance that gorgeous girl would be there. As luck would have it I run into her in the lobby of the dining hall and we eat lunch and talk for 3 hours. We never saw any of the three people from the class and I don’t think I’ve spoken to them since.

I add her on Facebook rather than ask her for her number because I’m a coward and we get lunch together several more times the first two weeks of class. Then she asks me if I’ll go with her to this party that her roommate wants to go to. We both hate it. I kiss her after walking her back to her dorm and we’ve been together ever since.”

27. I gave her a ride to a Beyoncé concert.

“THE BEYONCÉ CONCERT

September 10 (Last Year) St. Louis

Friend (now girlfriend) of mine needed a ride to go to Beyoncé’s Formation tour since her best friend had to cancel on her. Since I have my car, she went to me for a ride.

We left from Memphis to St. Louis listening to music the whole way (4-5 hour drive). Did some talking, but only small conversations. We did have a conversion of past relationships (mine was nonexistent). I did however upon her request, described what I found attractive about humans. It’s also important to mention that she was single at the time.

Eventually we made it to the concert. Seriously packed concerts are not introvert friendly.

At some point of the concert, it was pretty obvious that Beyoncé was going to sing ‘single ladies.’

BUT!!!

Right before the song started, Beyoncé exclaims out loud ‘where are all the single ladies at?!?!’ The crowd went really loud.

Knowing that my friend is single, I looked at her to see if she was screaming with the crowd… but she wasn’t.

Instead, she was looking at me. Quickly grasped my right hand and said: “I don’t think I am anymore…”

And that was that…”

28. After my divorce, I walked into her classroom every day for 6 months to pick up my kid.

29. She got drunk and was all over me. I just played it cool and didn’t do anything.

“She got drunk and was all over me. I just played it cool and didn’t do anything. She was very aggressive but I knew I would be taking advantage if I let it go anywhere. With the knowledge of her interest I called her the next day. She was embarrassed but we started dating soon after. We are married with 4 kids.”

30. I would drop in on her social media pages and see if she was talking about me.

“First day of my second semester of eleventh grade, I’m sitting in class making note of my new classmates as they walked in, wondering if there would be anyone I knew. Future SO walks in. I knew she existed, but hadn’t ever talked to her or really even been in the same room up until then as far as I knew. This is where the story starts sounding cheesy and made up, but in that quick moment I felt something that went beyond just “huh. She’s cute.”

Cue my complete and utter infatuation. We sat on opposite sides of the room and I was waaaay too shy/awkward to make a move, so I would try and listen to what she talked about during class. I quickly realized she was really funny and we even liked the same music.

Now, this is where normal people would go up and say ‘hey, I heard you like insert band name here, me too!’ Or try and make small talk. What did I do?

I would drop in on her social media pages and see if she was talking about me or try and get a glance at what she was like beyond what I already knew. Creepy? Sure. But that’s where the story gets good.

One day after school, I’m sitting in my room playing video games. I take a break and open my laptop, go to her twitter, and I just about shit a brick.

I see her and her friends having a back and forth conversation about me. For an introvert like me, this is like a dream come true. A little bit more time passes and she adds me on Facebook. As all this is happening, I can’t help but feel like this is meant to be. Yet, I still didn’t approach her (not even via messenger).

Around this time I was planning on getting a phone. After doing so, I shared this news on my Facebook feed and casually suggested people should send me their numbers so I can add them. Not long after, Future SO sends me her number, and while I’m freaking out on the outside, I reply with a ‘okay lol.’

However, I was still really nervous. Until one day her friend texts me asking about Future SO. She tells me more about her and that I really should talk to her. And for the first time in my life, I made the first move and texted her.

From then on, we talked every single day as much as possible. Eventually I gained the courage to ask her to go on a date during lunch break. I was absolutely terrified because I tend to seem way more relaxed and sociable via text than I am in person. I thought she’d see this and lose interest.

First date ends up going great. It was still plenty awkward, but we got along well and had some fun conversation. We dated for a while after that before officially becoming a couple.

We are now less than a month away from our 5-year anniversary. We have both moved away from home together, finished college together, and will be taking the next step in life together. I love her more than absolutely anything and am so lucky to have met someone who wasn’t immediately put off by my social flaws. I’m extremely lucky. The way things fell together just felt so natural. She’s not just my girlfriend or future wife, she’s truly my best friend.

It’s also worth noting that since telling my girlfriend all this, she’s revealed that her experience nearly mirrored mine.”

31. We met at a science conference.

“We met at a science conference. I was a quiet Ph.D. student presenting my poster. She was a ridiculously cute and quirky master’s student that let me text her about her toes. It was destiny. First date was a couple days later at an Arctic Monkeys show at a tiny venue. She passed out and the guards thought I drugged her. She cooled off and rehydrated. We went to my place that night and the rest is history. Today is the one year anniversary of our marriage.”

32. She was passing by and asked if she could work out with me some time.

“We lived at the same apartment complex.

I was trying hard to get in shape, so I was doing one of those workout videos (one of the P90x or something like that) and my sliding door was open for ventilation. She was passing by and asked if she could work out with me some time. We started working out and eating together afterwards like 3-4x a week. Then we started to hang out more than just to work out. Didn’t take long til we were married!”

33. I tried to make conversation, but she really wasn’t responding so I figured she had no interest in me.

“Not really having many friends in college, I attended a smaller, more laid back rush event at a fraternity that involved making and baking your own mini pizzas. I saw her walk in and immediately wanted to talk to her and thought she was really cute.

I eventually managed to sit next to her and two people she came with at a table. I tried to make conversation but she really wasn’t responding so I figured she had no interest in me. I then also realized one of the two people she was with was her boyfriend. Ah well. After that night I thought about her a lot. A few weeks passed and I got a notification on an on campus dating app that she wanted to go out with me.

Turns out she had not only broken up with her (apparently very shitty boyfriend) but also was just very very shy and her lack of responses didn’t mean she hated me after all.

We met up, had a pleasant yet awkward first date, and have been together since.”

34. They set my wife and I up and poked and prodded me into position!

35. I met my fiancé at our college’s anime club.

“I met my fiancé at our college’s anime club. It was my first time attending a club of any sorts and was play fighting with some new friends when this stranger joined in and threw water on my head. I got real upset and embarrassed so left to go sit alone and play on my phone. Later he came over and saw what I was playing and said “cool, I love that game.” He grabbed a paper cup and doodled my favorite character on it and gave it to me before walking away. He was apparently a close friend of my new club friends so by association we were “friends”. A few months later our club was attending an anime con and we all went to the con’s late night rave/dance thing. I started getting a panic attack due to the large crowd and slipped out to be alone. My best friend noticed I was gone and grabbed him to help look for me. They eventually found me in the parking lot heading back to my hotel. My best friend was used to seeing me freak out but he was still pretty much a stranger so I told him to go away and said some pretty mean things so that he’d leave but he didn’t. He stayed with me for the rest of that night and here we are almost 3 years later, I love that man to pieces and still have that paper cup doodle :)”
