8 Lines About Life From Adam Sackler Of HBO’s Girls

By

Meet Adam from GIRLS: raw, urgent, id-oriented, impulsive, and not the most stable of characters. However, is it just me, or do some of the show’s best lines – life wisdom lines – flow effortlessly from his mouth? I compiled some of my favorite quotes here.
And just because I could tell you her middle name, or what kind of record she liked, that doesn’t mean anything. That’s not a connection, anyone can have that. Really knowing someone is something else. That’s a completely different thing. And when it happens, you won’t be able to miss it. You’ll be aware. And you won’t hurt or be afraid. (Season 3)

So, you know the details of someone’s life – you have their interests and their likes/dislikes down to a tee. But does that really equate a connection? Here, Adam lets us know that forging a genuine connection is something that will make your insides shine; you’ll intuitively know, and you won’t be fearful of further involvement.

Boredom is bullshit. It’s just for lazy people with no imagination. (Season 3)

How do we escape a bored frame of mind? We create.

She was persistent, man, and she just hung around, and hung around, and showed up at my place, and gradually, it started to feel better when she was there. It wasn’t love, the way I imagined it. I just felt weird if I didn’t know what she was up to or whatever. And I liked knowing that she was going to be there, and warm, and staying the night. And she acted like I was teaching her everything about fucking history, about sex. She didn’t know what street Central Park started on or how to use soap, and I showed her. And I wanted that chance to show someone everything. But she changed her mind about me, and it was that fast. (Season 2)

Love isn’t necessarily likened to pop culture’s picture perfect montage in a romantic comedy on the big screen. Love might creep upon you, unexpected and unconventional. And as strange as the manifestation may be, once you realize that truth, you hope to long onto it for as long as possible.

When you love someone, you don’t have to be nice to them all the time. (Season 2)

I’ll be honest; I wasn’t sure how to perceive this line, initially. Though, when you love someone, sometimes bad moods still surface and negative emotions simply get in the way. You can also interpret this quote as a ‘tough love’ kind of endeavor. And tough love, is still love.

I’m a difficult person. Everyone’s a difficult person. Hannah was accepting of my brand of difficult. She was okay with it. (Season 2)

This is most definitely one of my favorite lines from the whole series. Aside from being flawed individuals, we all have our difficulties that make us human, that make us unique. Accepting those ‘brands of difficult’ is really a beautiful thing.

Holding onto toxic relationships is what keeps us from growing; you’re forming every time you shed a layer. You’re getting closer to yourself. (Season 1)

Sometimes we find ourselves in relationships that are unhealthy, but because we’re emotionally attached, it’s hard to let go. Yet, when you do, you experience growth and learn from the experience.

You chase me like I’m in the fucking Beatles for six months, and then when I finally get comfortable with things, you wanna shrug? (Season 1)

Oof. Miscommunication or lack of efficient communication, can invite murky territory. He’s confused, and I can understand why.

I don’t do ice cream. It’s like sweet mucus. (Season 1)

I threw in this gem for giggles, but I see what he’s saying. It’s healthier to steer clear from too much sugar anyway.
