7 Tricks To Looking (And Feeling) Glamorous In The Dead Of Winter

By

Feeling a little ho-hum about your daily look? I feel you. I wear the same makeup and outfit almost every day: leggings, boots, filled-in brows, mascara and red lipstick. It’s an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” kinda thing, because it’s a good look. But it gets boring.

I’m a big advocate for injecting a little glamour into your daily life. This is especially fun in the dead of winter, when everyone’s teetering on the edge of cold-weather craziness. It’s too cold to do anything except hang out in your house in an evening gown and Ugg slippers, which is something I have done more than once. Feeling stuck is the worst.

Wanna bust out of your routine and channel some decadent Elizabeth Taylor-style glamour? Or even Blanche Deveraux. I support glamour in all forms. You don’t have to go full Miss Piggy style, but you can if you want! Here are a few simple tricks to get you out of that rut.

1. One ridiculous piece of clothing that makes you feel a little bit magical.

For me, this is my silver fox fur coat ($140 from Craigslist and super warm) and my blue sequined jumpsuit. These are items of clothing that, once I put them on, make me feel like a much better version of myself. Maybe it’s a pair of impractical shoes – or practical shoes! I have a pretty magical pair of cotton candy Nikes. All that matters is that this item gives you a really good feeling.

2. Red lipstick.

Get thee to the Revlon section of your local Target and pick up one of their red lipsticks. They’re all great and also cheap enough for experimentation. I don’t know what it is about red lipstick, but since I slicked on my first red at the tender age of 13 I’ve been hooked. It’s become part of my personality. I feel naked without it. All of the most captivating women in the world have worn red lipstick, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t. If it freaks you out, just dab a tiny bit on like a stain. Easy-peasy. If pink/nude/orange/purple is your thing, then by all means, slather that shit on!

3. Confidence.

Like what you like. If you feel like going out to dinner dressed in ____ (fill in that blank with whatever you like! I don’t judge.), then do it. Who gives a shit what other people say? Other people are kind of awful sometimes. Confidence is tough, though. It takes some serious time to feel OK in your skin or to be fine with the person you are. I’m not gonna be that writer that tells you you’re perfect as you are and I think you’re fabulous, because that’s just blather. YOU have to feel it. And you will!

4. Perfume.

I carry myself differently depending on the perfume I’m wearing. Now that I’m back working at the tony Galleria location of my store, I’m wearing more Chanel perfume and less Pink Sugar. Scent has the power to transform you, comfort you, take you back in time. You can be whoever you want with just a spritz.

5. Lashes.

You gotta have lashes for the full-on glamour experience. If you want fake ones, I recommend the new Kiss natural line or Eyelure. Or go to MAC and buy a pair, then have the stylist apply them for you. Otherwise, load on that mascara. I use Lancome Hypnose Drama religiously for the longest, blackest, flirtiest glamour-girl lashes of all time.

6. A bubble bath.

Bubble baths are my favorite thing in the entire world. Sometimes I buy the cheap Bodycology bottles at Target for $3, then dump most of the bottle in a hot bath and lounge like a princess. Lush makes some ultra-princessy bubble bars and bath bombs too; Sex Bomb is obviously one of my favorites. And how can you possibly feel blah about a pink-tinted bath? Nobody can! Not even boys.

7. Celebrity biographies.

I love reading about my favorite Hollywood heroines when I’m down. Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe, La Liz, even Jenna Jameson’s sprawling autobiography “How to Make Love Like a Porn Star” enthrall me and transport me to a more glamourous world than my Minnesota couch.
