The Funniest Show On TV That You May Not Know About

I’m not sure what it is about a brilliantly written comedy series, with a magnificent cast and a ton of jokes that makes it less popular, but this trend seriously needs to stop. Arrested Development died because of it, and Community is currently clinging to life. Now, Happy Endings is in its third season and while it’s not necessarily in the deepest of danger, it’s worthy of much higher ratings than it’s currently receiving. I won’t call it the best, since a sense of humor is subjective, but it’s safe to say that Happy Endings is amongst the top comedy series’ currently on television.
For those unfamiliar, Happy Endings features an ensemble cast playing a group of friends living in Chicago. Where this separates itself from other shows with a similar setup is the key. It’s diverse, featuring an interracial couple and a gay male. It’s relevant, and regularly references pop culture and current events. The other unique thing about this show is that it’s found the perfect middle ground between absurd and realistic, that makes it over-the-top, but not so much that it isn’t relatable.
So, when there’s a hilarious comedy series that’s so clever, it’ll have you discovering new jokes when watching episodes for the second and third time, why is it that people don’t watch? Do some folks need a laugh track to inform them when something’s funny? Do the majority of people want jokes that are blatant instead of stuff that takes a moment to process, a second look or a quick Google search to grasp? Where’s the fun in simple? It’s so much more fulfilling to have a bunch of oh-I-get-it! moments, than a half hour of the same episode concepts you’ve been seeing since the 80s and 90s, with different characters. We can’t keep letting these genius comedy series’ be rated lower than the basic humor, prepackaged storyline sitcoms, that tend to draw higher ratings.

It’s only part way through the third season, but I assure you it’s worth it to go back and watch the first two seasons to get all of the way caught up.
