10 Thoughts On My Upcoming 10 Year Reunion

By

1) I’m getting old. We’re almost 30. I can’t believe it has been ten years. That’s three thoughts in one. I can’t even think straight in my old age.

2) At some point, it will be REALLY awkward. And I really have no idea what to expect. I picture the prom scene from the movie ‘Carrie’, sans the blood, mixed with Michael J. Fox dancing in a letter-jacket and an ‘American Pie’ like montage where all of my friends randomly lock-eyes with one another late in the night and raise our drinks. Oh, and a lot of Drake.

3) It will be funny and standard to see people revert back to their cliques. I will do it too, it’s a comfort thing. But it will also be nice to walk around and see different people.

4) I try to stay close and keep in-touch with the people I hung out with most in high-school, so for us, it will be a party. And I plan to make the most of it and have a good time.

5) Ten years was long enough for me to realize that it’s not about showing off or trying to be cool. That was all I cared about in high-school and looking back I was kind of a douche. That’s not what life is about. This isn’t ‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion’. I have no desire to make myself sound successful or more important than I am. I really don’t even look forward to talking about myself at all, honestly. Although, I do look forward to showing off my wife and flashing a few pictures of my dog (that guy, I know). BTW, I actually invented Post-Its.

6) You had to be there. Uh, no, our stories are fucking hilarious. Period.

7) I will most-likely realize that I am not as close with some people as I thought I was. That part might be tough. People change. What I had in common with someone back in the day may be way off-base now. The thing is, that’s life. But…

8) It will be a unique opportunity to find out what I have in common with other people and it’s an awesome chance to form new, unexpected relationships. That may be the most exciting part.

9) I ran into a girl that I graduated with at the grocery the other day. It was nice to see her. I could have played the ‘I don’t see you’ card and went on with my day but instead I made eye-contact and said hello.

After the quick pleasantries we could have ended the conversation but I brought up the reunion so we continued our conversion into the parking lot and then went our separate ways.

I usually avoid most conversations when I am by myself but I’m glad I had this one. This girl and I weren’t great friends in high-school but we have known each other for a long time and it was nice to hear that she is doing well.

My point is, if you force yourself to be social you just might end up having some quality conversations and maybe make some new, old friends.

10) Surprisingly enough there is no one that I am dreading seeing. Instead, I am really looking forward to attending and I look forward to seeing where life has taken us.
