7 Creepy, Thought-Provoking Music Videos

By

At a time when it’s so easy to make basic, generic music videos consisting of models and musicians singing into HD cameras — it’s always great to appreciate the creative, but sometimes bone-chilling creations out there. In these seven videos you won’t see any bottles popping, booties shaking or bands playing casually in a brightly lit room. I’m sure that made some folks hit the “X” in the corner to close the window, but for the wise who stuck around, here are seven music videos capable of keeping creeping you out, provoking your thoughts and keeping you awake at night.

1. Ramona Falls – I Say Fever

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga0ohgZFVqc]

This is one of my personal favorite videos of all time. For the past couple years I’ve watched it every so often, trying to assess its meaning. Maybe I’m over evaluating here but I feel like there’s some significant message or story being told. If you have a theory, by all means share it because I’m stumped. However, the lyrics of the song state, “This is just code to decipher” and the phrase “five years” is mentioned multiple times. So the fact that the have the same letters means “I Say Fever” = “Five Years.” An interesting anagram and a stimulating song/video. (Pause at 3:18 for some extra nightmares tonight.)

2. MGMT – Kids

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe4EK4HSPkI]

This is pretty terrifying and cringe worthy, especially when you see that poor child actor in tears. Make sure to watch the video first, but to ease your concerns afterward I’d suggest checking out the making of. It’ll make what you’ve just witnessed much easier to digest. Anyway, I’m not sure exactly what to make of this video but I’ve read various theories online that it’s related to drugs, growing up or even The Giving Tree. Whatever the case may be, there are monsters and scary faces that make me want to turn on lights and call my Mom on the phone.

3. Tyler The Creator – Yonkers

Cockroaches, vomit, black eyes and odd behavior by Tyler The Creator join forces in the make of a disturbing concoction. His generally angry lyrics give him a fearsome persona, which leads to the entire three minutes feeling very eerie. It’s consistently ominous and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.

4. Childish Gambino – Bonfire

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qL1B_r9nC9k]

Bonfire isn’t necessarily going to scare you, but it’s freaky enough that it will get the wheels of your brain spinning. There’s a story here but it’s not clear exactly what that is. I think it’s safe to say that the man played by Gambino is a ghost, and the campfire story being told is of his legend. The rest of the details are unclear, but it’s definitely worth some deliberation.

5. Grizzly Bear – Ready, Able

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Puph1hejMQE]

This song and video confuse me a great deal. It’s unclear if I’m supposed to be terrified or amused, and the constantly changing expressions on those clay faces don’t make the decision any easier. It gets rather creepy at some parts and by the end, it’ll have ruined Play-Doh (and possibly a pair of clean underwear) for you.

6. Soundgarden – Black Hole Sun

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mbBbFH9fAg]Oldie but creepy. It scared me in 1994, and it scares me as much if not more to this day. The apocalyptic setting is what reels you in, the creepy smiles and distorted faces are what keep you watching in fear. This one begins weird, gets weirder and doesn’t ever let up on the oddness pedal.

7. Aphex Twin – Come to Daddy

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUmNmpGnKp4]

Not just this video, but pretty much any Aphex Twin video is going to be abnormal. I wouldn’t recommend watching this one before bedtime, as it’s full of images that will haunt you in your sleep. Seriously, those horrifying faces are the reason night lights exist.
