Why, in your view, has your Internet presence become so popular?
I just keep expanding my presences. I don’t limit myself to one spotlight and I don’t think I ever will. Honestly, I don’t believe I am “too good” for any type of microfame, well, with the exception of pornography, camwhoring, and department store modeling.

How did you become involved in Hipster Runoff? What are some memorable things that “Carles” has said to you on Gmail chat?
Carles discovered me in 2007 when I was just a wee fourteen-year-old entry-level alt. He says a lot of memorable things on Gmail chat, but in order to maintain the exclusivity of our meaningfulcore bond, I won’t repeat any of them.

Do you exercise regularly?
My exercise mainly comes from walking. I used to do kickboxing and jazz dance.

What is your favorite website, and why?
Obviously, Hipster Runoff. It completely captures my sense of humor. Carles and I maintain the same “the internet is just a game” mindset, which makes us extremely compatible. He’s the one who introduced me to that perspective in the first place.

What are some memorable things that were said or that happened while constructing this blog post?
I’d have to say the most memorable moment for me was my entire conversation with the second dude I interviewed (he identified himself as “Polaroid”). This guy
honestly believed that he was an “indie kid.” His knowledge of MGMT had him
feeling “transcendent” over his general social scene, but not transcendent enough to separate himself from attending raves and socializing with ravers. I hate to be like this, but he is the absolute epitome of a self-unaware poseur. I affectionately stroked his ego, regardless.

If you had to choose between eating 500 waffle cones in one sitting while being filmed by a reporter who is broadcasting live on CNN and is constantly mimicking and yelling expletives at you,or gradually growing a gigantic weird bumpy thing on the side of your face; which would you choose?
Without even considering the second option, I chose the 500 waffle cones. Definitely seems like an extreme undertaking, but if I “smoked a lot of dank” I’d probably be hungry enough. And having a powerful, older man yelling at me seems kind of sexually stimulating.

Who are three people whose personal brands you admire, and why?

Unchill AZN Bro because he’s a gimmick maverick.

Zachary German because he’s extremely hot but for some reason still nice to the little people.

Travis McFarland because he has the best sense of humor in the multiverse and beyond.

He runs TheFieldNotes.com, a popular fashion and life style blog, and is a contributor to the print and web edition of Vibe Magazine, the urban quarterly founded by Quincy Jones.

Why did you drop out of NYU?
I couldn’t wake up in time for classes. More so, I was bored and I didn’t like being with other students. I didn’t feel like one of them. But I do like to learn when it’s for the sake of gaining useful knowledge. I couldn’t give a brown lump of poo about Macroeconomics, but certain things fascinate me like ancient Roman history. I also love languages. I speak French fluently and studied Italian at NYU.

What are your favorite items in your closet?
I get obsessed with certain pieces for a few weeks at a time. Right now I love these white and gray Cheap Monday leggings I bought from Inven.tory that had a red carpet moment so they can’t be worn out to an event again. I have a blazer that I studded myself, which I wore more than any other item in my closet all season.

Your three favorite places to shop in NYC:

Tokio 7

M&J Trimmings

Inven.tory

What makes a good party?
Exclusivity, passed champagne and hors d’oeuvres. Good publicists.

What the hell happened to your novel?
That’s a whole drama but I think it’ll be resolved if a certain project I’m waiting on goes through. I had finished the second and final draft last summer and had an agent but when he left his agency, there was no one there that felt strongly enough about the novel to represent it. It’s incredibly hard for a first time novelist to get published and I don’t want to go down the self-publishing route. I feel that it’s a quality piece of entertainment that can and will be published traditionally.

Will you share your favorite paragraph from it?

“Nice to meet you,” she said in her breathy voice that seemed to lack clear distinction between words so that they came out in one languorous wave. Just like that, she turned around and disappeared. He always felt chastised by this type of behavior, which was actually the norm among the social set. While it was his natural instinct to want to talk, people at parties generally cut conversations short and limited their interaction with one another to maximize their socializing potential. They key was to make sure as many people as possible saw you at the party, or in this case, in the VIP tent.

He figured that Theresa had been attracted like a moth to the crowding photographers and camera flashbulbs but had been disappointed when she stumbled upon him and two girls she didn’t know. Theresa was something of a new-guard socialite—one without piles of family money but that had cultivated a persona by attending almost every event that had a Patrick photographer and forging connections with other young influential people who could advance her somehow. As it was said about her, she’d attend the opening of an envelope if she was sure there would be a photographer. He almost had to admire that type of fierce dedication.

What are you reading right now?
I have about ten books on my nightstand. I’m trying to plow through Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged, but when I’m in the mood for something less bombastic, I’ll reach for Candace Bushnell. I’m rereading One Fifth Avenue because I love her witty style and find myself mimicking it in my own work. My favorite author of all time though is Tom Robbins.

What’s your alcoholic beverage of choice?
Sober is the new drunk, except when it’s not and then it’s strictly champagne.

Are you dating anyone?
I’m going to join a nunnery if I don’t get any action soon.

Finish this sentence, Terry Richardson is…
Overrated and incredibly creepy-looking.

Barack Obama is…
Better than any of the other options.

Roman Polanski is…
Probably a victim of the US legal system and the unthinking public that likes to pillory intellectuals.

Lady Gaga is…
An indefatigable genius.

A guestofaguest.com is…
A pretty accurate social barometer for relevancy within a very select microcosm.

This is a great quote…,
“Humanity has advanced, when it has advanced, not because it has been sober, responsible, and cautious, but because it has been playful, rebellious, and immature.” –Tom Robbins, Still Life With Woodpecker

Sam Brown was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and moved to Sydney, Australia to finish his early education at a Technology High School, then continued studying Multimedia Design at the Computer Graphics College Sydney and the Private SAE Institute before spending a year working at a boutique design house. Now, under the name Massive Blue, Brown runs an accomplished web design and development company from his hometown of Edinburgh, which serves clients from around the world. Sam also runs a popular blog on all things geek and technological.

How did you get into design and computers in the first place?
From an early age my father was my biggest influence. It was the other way around for me though, as a kid I was around computers all the time due to his line of work and one day he came home with a book on HTML – that really set of my passion for the web and building things for it. Later in school I realized I was just as interested in how things looked from both a visual and user experience viewpoint and have since been doing both designing and building for the web.

You recently redesigned your portfolio site, will you share this design with us?

What’s the thinking behind this interface, this design?
This is my portfolio, it’s also my little playground on the web where I like to experiment with new techniques and push the boundaries a little bit. Almost all of my clients are referred to me from happy past clients or colleagues so I wasn’t afraid to try something different and used a 1080px grid for design that is fairly wide compared to the norm.

The design and build utilises a lot of the emerging technologies such as the latest and greatest new CSS3 techniques. I’m essentially creating a barrier for entry, if you like pushing the boundaries and using the latest technology and don’t care about old browsers that should have died a slow painful death a long time ago? You are my perfect client.

What’s the best part about being a freelancer?
Having the freedom and flexibility to work with who I want, when I want and where I want are definitely the best parts. I’m in complete control of my own success and really appreciate the position I am in today, albeit it was down to a lot of hard work initially.

The worst?
Working on my own. Definitely. I have a great home office setup that I love, it’s perfect for me in every way except that I sit here on my own, every day. That’s a real bummer and there is a lot to be said for some human contact every day and the ability to bounce ideas and designs off other people.

What inspires you?
Everything and anything, it’s an oft asked question and I am unable to give an answer that is going to be right for someone else. It might be a magazine layout, a book I’m reading or the way the wind is blowing the trees… it’s really personal and I am often inspired by the most unusual and mundane things.

Do you consider yourself more of an artist or engineer?
I’m not an artist, certainly not the traditional form anyway. Interface design for screen is my passion and a lot of that isn’t just designing in Photoshop but building in front-end code HTML & CSS. Engineer it is then.

What are your thoughts on the iPad? Is it really that revolutionary?
You have to sit down and use one to appreciate the market Apple are targeting. For me it’s a fantastic consumption device, I can shut down my computer and leave my office at the end of the day but still have the ability to access the web and consume, be it news, emails from friends, Facebook or chatting with friends. Working on a computer all day has meant I miss a lot of that as I’m in work-mode, and sitting down in my office in the evenings is the last thing I want to do. Having an iPad that gives me access to the full web and ever smarter and amazing applications is a real delight.

Truth be told, I wrote the answers to this interview entirely on my iPad.

Would you say most websites on the Internet right now are, um, ugly?
I certainly wouldn’t disagree with that, the web is such a fast paced and ever changing environment. No-one can sit still and sites must continue to evolve. Now with the vast array of devices connecting to the internet there are a lot of design decisions that need to be made quickly to make sure that sites keep up and work well with the end users device of choice.

What’s one of the most beautiful websites on the net?
That is a really tough question, I am consistently coming across beautiful websites both from a visual and technological stand point. I’d be hard pressed to nail down my decision to just one website. I think just looking at some of the work being done on http://dribbble.com shows that we are certainly in for a treat and that elusive one beautiful website is myth.

What’s the best part about living in Edinburgh?
It’s certainly not the weather. Edinburgh is such a beautiful city that marries the old with the new in such a wonderful way. The people here are great, there is a good community of industry professionals and we are a stone’s throw away from other hubs in London, Europe and New York is just a quick hop across the pond. It’s a great place to be living and working.

Do you have a motto?
“Do. More. Awesome. Shit.” – If I have a motto, that’s it. A lot of young people ask how to get involved, get started, get clients. That’s my advice, stop talking about doing stuff and actually get out there and do stuff. You learn so much more by actually doing things than reading or learning about how to do them. Go do more awesome shit right now.

How drunk would you have to be to sleep with Tucker Max?
Is it possible to drink enough to permanently alter your DNA? That drunk.

Will there ever be a Sloane Crosley book not about Sloane Crosley?
I hope so. It will probably still have my name on the cover though. I do see giving the “I” vowel a rest but if I produce a decent novel, I’m sure I’ll want my name slapped on it. I think Joyce Carol Oates has a whole franchise of mysteries just casually under a pseudonym. You have to have a pretty flush brain to be that generous with your creative wealth.

What makes a good day in your life?
Leaving the house after 9 but before 10. Learning something new. Feeling content around people and then feeling relieved and content when I’m by myself again. That, sprinkled with good food, cocktails, good music, some brownies, something truly amazingly funny and maybe some newly acquired item like headphones (I’m on the hunt) and cool summer shoes.

And a bad one?
Dry brownies. Nothing is worse than a dry brownie.

What do you think about critics?
Well, I have been a book publicist for about a decade so I have no blanket thoughts but lots of specific examples in mind. Sometimes I think they’re brilliant people who help control what’s on America’s bookshelves and sometimes they review the book they think the author should have written or they wish they themselves had written. Luckily it’s usually the first. I’m also answering this as “book critics” because I have no sense of how many people are just critical of me in general.

Are you happy to be done with school?
Ecstatic! It’s great feeling knowing I will never have to study for a test or write a research paper ever again. But it’s a little stressful looking for jobs and figuring out my life after college.

What’s next?
If I found a job in L.A. or New York I would absolutely move, but I am thinking about moving to Atlanta as well.

Are you dating anyone?
No, I am too career focused right now to deal with a relationship.

How did marycatherinemoody.com come about?
I have had several different websites throughout the years. First, I used wix.com, then I decided to go a different route from Flash, so I coded a site with Dreamweaver. Then I discovered a portfolio builder called Cargo Collective which I have really enjoyed and is my website right now.

What was the best part about going to college in the south?
Mostly the weather. I adore New York more than you could ever know, but I have a hatred for the harsh winters.

How do you describe your personal style?
I guess, it could be categorized as city chic. It’s classic with an urban vibe. During the winter I live in leather and leggings, and for the summer I have been wearing cut-off jean shorts and mini skirts. I wear a lot of black.

Will you share some of your designs with us?

Why is Karl Lagerfeld a genius?
He is a fashion god, insane photographer, videographer, and an all around design genius. I am completely infatuated with him. He might be 77 years old, but he is more modern, technologic, and “hip” than most men I know! Everything he sends down the runway I adore, almost as much as his beyond-fabulous show sets. I mean, who else imports a 265 ton iceberg from Sweden to the Grand Palais for a runway show? (You can’t ask me about Karl without expecting a long response!)

What makes a good party?
Great friends, music, and laughter. Oh, and a rockin’ outfit.

Radiohead or MGMT?
Radiohead all the way. They are brilliant.

Who are you more like: Scarlett O’Hara or Zelda Fitzgerlad?
Probably Zelda, because she was obsessed with perfecting her talent, ballet (similar to my obsession with fashion and art). She wanted to have a passion of her own, separate from her husband, so do I. Although she took it a bit far, developing schizophrenia and ending up in a mental institution. Let’s pray that doesn’t happen to me…

What are you doing with your life?
To be completely honest, I’m actually not sure. There are definitely a lot of things I want to do, but it takes time. I’m not rushing towards anything; I’m going slowly and just enjoying every second of it. I’m definitely going to continue working on my music. That is something which I really enjoy to do and it makes me happy.

What’s so great about reality TV?
How far away from reality it is.

What are your favorite brands and clothing pieces?
My favorite place to shop is Intermix. I loveee Marc Jacobs! His clothes are so unique and the jeans are awesome!

Are you dating anyone?
Nope. I’m not a big fan of boyfriends. I like doing my own thing and I don’t like having someone tell me what to do. I already have parents.

Nik Richie: Would you?
Stamp, next.

What’s the best restaurant in NYC?
Koi in Bryant Park.

What are you reading?
I just read the book Crazy Love by Leslie Morgan Steiner. Pretty intense story but it was really good.

What can’t you do without?
My blackberry. I seriously would sell a kidney to get it back if I lost it. It went flying out of my hand into the crowd at Coachella during David Guetta’s set. I literally got down on my hands and knees and crawled around people’s feet looking for it. And I actually found it!

Speaking of organs, how is your liver?
My poor liver. Manhattan is seriously the best place to party. I’ve experienced nightlife in a lot of cities and they all suck. My favorite nights to go out are Wednesdays and Sundays. I hate NYC nightlife on the weekends. Everything is so packed and everyone is from like Staten Island. Over the weekends my favorite thing to do is go to brunch parties during the day. I just party all day.

How do you have time for school and your music and partying?
Haha. I told you I am vampire.

Is what they say true? You’re a horrible bitch?
The worst! Watch out.

At the age of fifteen, he dropped out of high school to pursue his music and art full-time. This decision led to problems at home and financial difficulties as well. But Drew made it work and by the time he was eighteen his act Never Shout Never had already been on several high-profile tours with the likes of Dashboard Confessional and Gym Class Heroes and won the MTV Woddie Award for best new artist (beating out Grizzly Bear and Passion Pit). He landed a deal with Warner Bros. Records; his 2010 debut mini-album, What is Love? and has sold over 60k copies to date.

What’s up?
I’m chilling in New Haven, it’s great, smoking a cigarette outside. I’m around a lot of cool buildings.

So, what are you trying to accomplish this year?
Just pretty much a year of growth for me. To grow as a person and an artist. Umm. Transform from an awkward eight-year-old kid into somebody in their twenties, like an adult – haha. And we’re going to start making a new record soon, which I’m really excited about.

What keeps you going?
I think just people. It kind of blows my mind all the people I meet on tour and all their positive energy. They love me, I love them: seeing people smile, seeing people happy – that’s everything. And my family and best friends of course.

How does it feel to have so many young people look up to you?
It’s difficult because I’m not the most perfect person. I have many flaws. A lot of the kids disagree with the things I do, like smoking ciggs and weed, but that’s just kind of who I am, who I have been. It’s kind of stressful trying to be perfect for these kids, but you know I just try my best, I try to set a good example, and just spread positive energy.

Is being on the road difficult?
It’s comfortable. I like sleeping on the bus at night while we’re driving through the country. I don’t think anything compares to being at home though. I love being home. Home is where… I am me. On the road, I almost have to play this character that these people think I am, at home I can just be, and hang out with people who love me for me, and really know me. Home is where I really belong.

What’s the most beautiful part about your hometown?
Being with my family and close friends. I love the parks. I always go to the park and just think a lot. There is a lot of cool nature trails, just like roll a joint with a couple of buddies, look at nature, look at trees and stuff.

What do you think of New York City?
Uh, it’s cool. It’s a little busy for me. I feel like it’s very vain. Everyone kind of just wastes their life there. They don’t really get to live. They just live the corporate or trendy life. I feel like life should be fun and enjoyable. New York does not seem to very hospitable to that, but I don’t know, whatever.

Tell us about your diet…
I’m a vegetarian with vegan tendencies. I would like to be vegan more, but it’s very hard on the road, especially in small towns. I drink a lot of fruit juices and I eat a lot of vegetables and bread. I love bread. I’ve always loved bread. My mom used to call me a “dough boy” when I was kid.

You’re big on social media, why?
I don’t like going out after shows. It’s kind of overwhelming and I hate having my picture taken so I try to make it up by hanging out with everyone on the web. I like the way it allows me to interact with fans in a less crazy, more controlled way.

Why do you despise “hate” so much?
Hate is holding back humanity from its full potential and I just like love, patience, and understanding. Those are the things which will advance humanity.
