All Of The Times When I Lost Myself

I lost myself once,
For a month
Down someone else’s couch.
And left when I grew tired
Of being
Crowded in the dark.

For 6 months
In someone else’s mouth.
And left when I found all
The words
They wouldn’t say out loud.

I lost myself once,
For a year
In someone else’s hands.
And left when they made
Promises
I didn’t understand.

I lost myself once,
For so long
That when I made it back –
The only things I knew
of Me
Were things I thought I lacked.

I found myself once,
Fast asleep
Inside of my own dream.
I kissed my eyes
And swore
To keep a closer watch on me.
