5 Things To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do

By

I am often plagued by indecision. Sometimes it is over trivial matters such as what movie to stream on Netflix and other times it is much more serious like asking myself what the next step in my life is going to be. We’ve all been in situations where we feel torn and don’t know what to do or where to go. The next time you are paralyzed with indecision remember to try these few things:

Lay down on the floor.

It doesn’t actually solve anything but that is usually the first thing I do. Something about being sprawled out on the floor makes me feel like I’m calling out to the universe going, “I’m here and I accept that I have no control!” As you lay there on the floor and surrender yourself to the universe, let thoughts float in and out of your mind and try not to fixate on one specific thing for too long. The answer you seek will probably not come to you and instead you will have flashbacks to that time you farted in 1st grade (in front of the whole class), but try to let these things go.

Make a list.

Make a list of the things that you don’t want to do with your life. I find it helpful to think about all of my dislikes because it helps to rule out some options and makes me feel like I’ve made some progress. For starters, I hate math so I know I am not going to be a mathematician. The first step in knowing what you want to do is having a clear understanding of the things you don’t want to do.

Write a letter to yourself.

I had a professor, that at the end of every semester would tell a very drawn out story about how her sister and her would leave tiny notes in egg shell ornaments that they would read every Christmas. She then would ask you to write a letter to yourself. After sealing your letter and handing it in you would suddenly find it in your mailbox after a few months later, when you probably had forgotten about it. The point of the letter was to remind you how things change and how you grow as a person. In this present moment you might feel stuck, but further down the road you will look back at the letter and smile because there were great things on the way that you didn’t even realize yet.

Do some cleaning.

If you write a letter to yourself there is a good chance that it will get lost in your room at some point so cleaning every once in a while will help turn things up that you thought you lost. Cleaning often makes me nostalgic about the past but it helps remind me of some of the adventures I’ve had and also what adventures I’ve dreamed of. Plus, lets be real, when was the last time you really did any cleaning?

Treat yourself.

One of the many lessons that can be obtained through watching parks and recreation is learning how to treat yo self. Tom and Donna have one day a year where they indulge in whatever they want without second guessing the practicality of it. When you feel lost you shouldn’t punish yourself but rather give yourself a break and realize that you’re human. Have a cupcake. In fact, have two cupcakes. The sweet deliciousness will make your heart happy and being happy is what it’s all about.
