5 Reasons To Get Excited For Sofia Coppola’s ‘The Bling Ring’

By

If you were unlucky enough to see the realized James Franco night terror Spring Breakers this past week, then you were also lucky enough to see a trailer for Sofia Coppola’s upcoming club-cat-turned-cat-burglar flick set to hit theaters in June. The film is based on the real-life group of LA teens who burglarized the homes of celebrities like Paris Hilton and Orlando Bloom in 2008. In case that taste wasn’t enough to convince you, here are a few reasons The Bling Ring should be added to your list of must-see summer movies.

1. Emma Bleepin’ Watson

Apart from her gentle smile and perfect eyebrows, Watson has proven her acting chops in The Perks of Being a Wallflower and the Potter films. When interviewed about her role in The Bling Ring she admits that she struggled figuring out a way to play the moral ambiguity that Coppola had written for her character. Give a young actress like that a challenge and she’s guaranteed to put out one hell of a performance.

2. The Rest of the Cast

Is Emma Watson really not enough for you? In addition to her leading role the cast includes School of Apatow alum Leslie Mann, that ghost girl from the first season of American Horror Story, and a girl who’s IMDB page consists solely of the role of “Maid #3” in The Dark Knight Rises. Who are we kidding? You’ll see it for Emma Watson.

3. An Honest Retelling of the Weirdest News Story of 2010

Sofia Coppola has definitely done her research. From her use of Nancy Jo Sales’ transcripts from the original Vanity Fair article on the story, to the film’s controversy started when an officer from the real ‘Bling Ring’ trials was consulted on the film, she’s taking the movie very seriously. And if her Oscar win hasn’t earned her enough screen cred for you, remember that she played “Child on Ship” in the second Godfather movie.

4. That Flirtatious Little Trailer

Besides the snappy editing and the kick-ass Sleigh Bells number, this trailer has everything you could ask for: breaking and entering, designer underwear, Emma Watson licking her lips, a boy in heels, a slow-motion walking sequence, a giant vodka bottle with a lit sparkler in it, and one of those freaky just-before-a-car-accident shots.

5. A Chance to See This Video on the Silver Screen

Who doesn’t remember this viral gem from the short-lived E! Network series Pretty Wild? The sobbing “person” on the cell phone? Alexis Neiers, one of the original Bling Ring members. Can we all take a moment to imagine this video recreated on the big screen? Cinematic gold.
