The First Straightforward Explanation Of US Crime Stats?
The above video seems to offer a pretty realistic assessment of violence in America. The point? Popular discourse isn’t presenting us with the best data (and naturally inferences) about violence and guns in the United States. The video pulls data from these government sources:
- FBI Uniform Crime Reports Table 16
- FBI Uniform Crime Reports Table 8
- Crimes Detected in England and Wales 2011/2012.
And proposes a rather interesting, less discussed solution focused on root issues.
The group who made the video goes by the name “Amidst The Noise.” They have a Twitter and Facebook, but make no statements about their organization or goals. Insight into their minds, though, might be extracted from their name, which seems to be a reference to a prose poem by Max Ehrmann, called “Desiderata,” which begins:
Go placidly amidst the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.
How great would it be if our media could do that.
