JK Rowling, our lord and savior, is about to find out if she’s got staying power beyond Hogwarts.
The publishing house Little Brown announced today that Rowling’s highly anticipated new book for adults will be called Harry Potter and The Casual Vacancy. The new novel is set to be released (super soon!) on September 27, 2012.
Like I’ve written in the past on this site, I’m definitely a kid who grew up with Harry Potter in the home. But I have no qualms about Rowling moving on from the beloved wizarding series. We’re all growing up, guys. It’s time for the woman richer than the Queen to show us what else she’s got up her sleeve. Time to leave our childhoods and enter a world where JK Rowling releases books that don’t include magic spells.
Oh god. I’m sorry. I just keep hearing this song in my head as I write this:
Just…some floo powder in my eye. That’s all. I’m not crying!
Seems like, even though it’s not a Potter book, The Casual Vacancy is going to be a fun, quirky mystery novel. This is the description of The Casual Vacancy’s plot from Little Brown’s site:
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?
Pagford, huh? Sounds suspiciously like Pigfarts to me. (Okay, it’s a stretch.)
