Miller’s use of monochrome brings to mind the nihilism that pervaded Europe after WWI. The futileness of watching millions die needlessly is represented by the cat’s apathy. The cat’s metaphorical utility doubles with the artist’s use of the cat to personify the demeanor of apathetic drunken hot chicks leaning on bars.
