1. “Wild Horses” by The Sundays

I love this cover of The Rolling Stones “Wild Horses” and not just because they play it in that movie Fearwhen Mark Wahlberg fingerbangs Reese Witherspoon on a rollercoaster (although it certainly doesn’t hurt.) I don’t even like cover songs but The Sundays manage to do their own beautiful take on it. I might even like it (gasp!} better than the original but don’t tell my classic rock loving father that.

2. “That’s The Way” by Led Zeppelin

I dare you to listen to this song and not feel a ton of emotion. Classic rock may have a certain level of predictability and cheesiness now but Led Zeppelin is an amazing band. Period. Their rock songs rock harder than anything else and their ballads exhibit a tenderness that is usually unheard of in all-male rock bands. Listen to “That’s The Way”, tear up, and pretend your Penny Lane for a sec.

3. “I’m On Fire” by Bruce Springsteen

I’m not a big Bruce Springsteen fan but this song continues to blow me away. It’s heartbreaking for reasons I can’t quite understand, which means that it’s done its job. When a song evokes powerful emotion out of you for seemingly no reason, you know it’s special. Plus, Bruce Springsteen is just the number one babe. Come on now. He’s the beautiful personification of the Fourth of July. Fantasizing about him is practically our American duty.

4. “Hypnotize” by The Notorious B.IG.

I just realized I posted three bummer songs in a row so here’s a happy one! It’s very White Boi of me to be like, “OMG, I love Biggie. He speaks to me!” but whatever. He’s so good! When this song comes on, I can’t not get like Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About Youand I’m sure you can’t either. Wanna try to be Mr. Cool Guy though? Play this song and resist dancing. Stay completely still and shoot people incredulous looks when you see them dancing. You’re having fun now, aren’t you?!

5. “Sun Was High (So Was I)” by Best Coast

I heard this song right around the time I had my seventh surgery after my car accident and because of the loads of Percocet the doctors gave me, I renamed the song “Sun Was High (So Was Rye}”. But even now, as I’m listening to it sober, I can’t help but fall in love with its dreamy guitars and fuzzy vocals. Gosh, I think it’s making me feel stoned again. Thanks, Best Coast! You’re way less sketchier than a prescription pad or a drug dealer!

    It’s weird how a bullseye agreement compels you to like an article. The fact is that Mary Jane’s Last Dance makes me think of the jukebox at my sixth grade dance.

    Googled “music machine with discs in diners” to come up with jukebox.

      FMI (for my information, in which I unprovokedly make a public statement) TMI: read the Mary Jane’s Last Dance blurb and lol’d, then listened to other songs; became overstatedly sentimental during Sun Was High (So Was I); fantasized, oddly, about giving Ryan O’Connell, or just some random guy or whatever, a blowjob while listening to Gimme More.

    I completely love you for adding The Boss and Tom Petty’s song to this list. “I’m on Fire” is so hauntingly romantic and classic.

    …Now, however, I have to judge your affinity for Blackout. Really?? Better than Femme Fatale!?

    blackout is one of brit’s best albums and i agree i’ll never get sick of it. femme fatale is amazing but i can’t say i haven’t gotten sick of it because it’s been playing on repeat for the last 8 months by my gay best friend. so glad wild horses was first on this list because it’s probably one of my favorite songs of all time. great list. can’t say i don’t agree with most of these songs being some of my favorites

        I like the DCs version too …. but maybe bc it was out around the time they made that statement about Bush and the war.  “Not Ready to Make Nice” …. I like that one alot too!

    “I’ve talked about my love for Blackout before and I’ll reiterate it again: It is one of the best pop albums of all time.” Redundant with ‘reiterate’ and ‘again’. IMO Blackout’s good but not exactly one of the best.

    I love “Silver Spring” from the reunion Fleetwood Mac did in the mid 90′s. Youtube it, makes me cry. And love “Tangerine” off Led Zep 3. Great selections. You mentioned the Sundays Wild Horses before with Buffy the vampire reference. Love this :-)

    I agree with most of these, and I can’t believe people don’t like “Under Pressure”!  I just hate the song “Landslide”.  But I’m pretty sure it’s the Dixie Chicks’ fault.

    Blackout is a fucking classic, but keep that on the hush. It’s meant for the fans.

    and pity about her not being in a psychotic daze anymore. Now she’s all hyped up on psychotropic drugs, which is really more a daze than the glimpse of the true Britney we had.
