Low-Carbon 27-Square-Meter Cube Home Is The Future

Although it could fit into my current apartment about four times over, this very small, very green box home actually seems pretty livable. The Cube, a prototype of which was unveiled last month at the Edinburgh Science Festival, is three meters on all sides and has a head height of two meters, creator Dr. Mike Page explains in this video.

Basically, it’s very, very small, with all furniture and appliances designed and selected for a “comfortable, modern existence with a minimum impact on the environment.” The house generates as much energy as it uses, composts or processes all waste, and emits low levels of carbon. Perfect! And since the space is set up with an Ikea-like efficiency, the Cube is, unlike this claustrophobia-inducing Manhattan apartment, actually kind of charming. TC mark

Soon, what will happen is that they will ask for one to be built comfortably for two people … then one comfortably for a family … then a family and a couple of pets … and before it you know it, we are back to square one…

Steve Grimes stole my comment. Exactly what I was thinking.

I could happily live in one of these, but where to keep the kids?

I wonder if these home's make for (cheap?) student housing. It'd be really awesome to have a whole neighborhood consisting of these, somewhat close to city centres!

Eh, I don't care much about the eco-friendliness of it, I just like how it all looks very Ikea-esque. I'd gladly live in a house like that, except I think I'd lower the TV just a bit, I don't want to have to look up to watch TV.

As a very clumsy person, that staircase might present a bit of a problem. But I still love the box idea. I would love to live either in one of these or in a Tumbleweed House.

i love tumbleweed houses!! glad someone mentioned them too!

This is so cool! Great idea for a 1st apartment once I'm out of school? I think yes.

What really gets me is that cellphones aren’t that old. In one generation we’ve gone from existing happily without them to wondering what life was like before them. It’s alarmingly fast, and a bit frightening. We treat our phones as natural extensions of our bodies, aware of our remaining battery life like we’re aware of how hungry we are — an elegant lie.

Recently, I asked a friend what the consensus about me was at that time, and she said, “We all seriously thought one day you might show up to school with a gun.” So let’s linger on that troubling revelation for a moment.

And while when you’re boarding the plane with no return ticket and no clear idea of how you’re going to suddenly construct an entirely new life for yourself, things can be incredibly intimidating, no drug on the planet could possibly replace the thrill. It’s wonderful.

Don’t get me wrong, I have always been a dynamic personality who could interact with and befriend the dead — but in 2011, having 1200 Facebook friends enables me to give just a perfunctory nod to each of them on a semi-regular basis without having to sustain any meaningful adult relationships.
