Ugh, dude. You’re going to be really embarrassed about writing this when you’re no longer a child. I don’t usually go after other writers, but this is just a dumbshit, literal-minded piece that falls back on a lot of goofiest white-boy hip hop criticism garbage. Yes, it’s funny that Rick Ross was a corrections officer, but that’s years old. The rest is pretty lame, dude; nobody tells Scorcese he’s inauthentic for making Mean Streets because he just GREW UP around criminal stuff– if you’re confused about Rick Ross using the first person in his lyrics, it might be time to go back to the drawing board with the whole being-a-music-writer thing.

I’m pretty sure Thought Catalog should never run another article about hip hop ever again and just stick to the bearded white boys they understand.

It’s official, the two worst pieces I’ve read on Thought Catalog have been criticisms of hip-hop artists (Kreayshawn being the other). Nothing says “I don’t understand hip-hop” like judging an artist based on his background rather than his music. Why do people like Rick Ross? Because Rick Ross makes great music. End of fucking story, for god’s sake.

I get your point of the story, but  honestly isin’t 95% of rap like this? I only defend Rick Ross a bit more because he is a Miami native like I am. Being a CO means nothing especially in Miami, the pay sucks, the hours are shit, and you are treated like shit. So why not exploit the system? We do not know if he was smuggling drugs or being crooked or something to that extent. You can not fault the guy for having a legit job. Another explanation could be maybe he was first on the straight and narrow then he saw the money was not enought and got into trappin’ with someone he knew. We don’t fault Biggie for being a gifted student or Pac (tupac), Biggie didnt start selling drugs or anything else until he was 17 and Pac went to Art school and never really lived in a bad neighborhood. I think today’s problem is that we are in the information era where things leak extremley fast and spread like wildfire. Do you think we would give Pac respect as a rapper or Biggie if we knew they were not as bad as they made it seem? It happens of part of the rap culture, you just have to know how to spin it in your favor and so far Rick Ross has been doing just that.

Much of rap is about buying into someone else’s persona.  Rick Ro$$’s appeal takes this idea to another extent – he is over the top, he’s describing an impossibly lavish lifestyle, full of supermodels and criminality. He’s the rap equivalent of a straight-up action movie – turn off your brain and just enjoy the ride. If that’s not your thing, fine, but to complain about his fakeness is to miss the point. There is room for a rapper like Rozay (just not too many of them). 

lol this topic is always spoken throughout the interwebs and to be honest a lot of people who are true hip hop lovers, go to the frauding side when it comes to rick ross. i am from miami and don’t care for the type of music but when i read articles with evidence to support what they are saying, i can understand why people wouldn’t like him because of his past and what he represents now.

Yeah, a lot of today’s biggest names in hip hop from kid kudi to kanye west are upper-middle class. You know Rick Ross actually had to change his name to Ricky Rozay after the real Rick Ross was released from prison. I think he went up to him and was all like ‘you can’t call yourself that anymore.’
