10 Albums For Depressed People

1. The Cure, Seventeen Seconds (1980)

The Cure’s Seventeen Seconds (1980) was the goth band’s second studio album. Its minimal, drum driven tracks and excruciating, faraway vocals about love, loneliness and loss are the perfect companion for the point in your night where you’re feeling the high of alcohol and the beauty of isolation. Lead singer Robert Smith’s vocals in Seventeen Seconds are overwhelmingly distant and sonic, and express a hard, highly relatable sort of sadness that hurts to listen to. The lyrics are similarly depressing. From the track featured here, “In Your House” (lyrics in their entirety):

I play at night in your house
I live another life
Pretending to swim
In your house
I change the time in your house
The hours I take
Go so slow …

I hear no sound in your house
Silence
In the empty rooms
I drown at night in your house
Pretending to swim
Pretending to swim

  • Ben Leach

I think its funny that Nico, Elliot Smith, and Nick Drake are all on this list and all have (arguably) the best songs on the Royal Tennenbaums soundtrack. Why did I never think of that movie as super depressing until just now? weird.

N'sync's first album and some blink 182 album HAVE to be on there cause that shit is goofy as hell and makes people so damn happyi love you

  • bollocks

This list could use more Antlers, Mountain Goats, the National, Walkmen, and Joy Division.

  • Tracy

    I second the Mountain Goats.

Also, I appreciate the inclusion of classical music. For all of y'all depressed people looking for some classical, though, I'd go for Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Mahler, or Stravinsky.

  • brandypass

    The Mountain Goats, yeah.

  • brandypass

I really like this article and it's obvious it took a lot of work to put it together and write so well. Nice.

  • brandypass

    Love The Wall!

  • brandypass

I agree. Sea Change is bar far the most depressing album I own. Well maybe that or City and Colour “Bring Me Your Love” (Which is gorgeous).

  • http://valentine-kitchenson.tumblr.com valentine-kitchenson

Where's the Joy Division? Unknown Pleasures is the ultimate album of self-loathing and pity.

Good job on the article, though. I enjoyed reading it!

  • http://valentine-kitchenson.tumblr.com valentine-kitchenson

Not to mention Beck's Sea Change.

That album makes me want to start slitting my wrists; in the best way possible, of course.

  • brandypass

Yeah a few of us mentioned that one.

  • http://twitter.com/buytoiletpaper Meaghan S

No mention of Neutral Milk Hotel? Two-headed Boy. also, so, so, so many others. Built to Spill oldschool.

Have depressed people listen to the 10 most depressing albums ever? Not even one upbeat album, or even just a single song?

  • Megan

the National's Boxer is so goddamn depressing.

  • Amy

There is nothing depressing about the XX. That album is made for good, old-fashioned, fucking.

  • angelikap

It don't get much darker than early 1980's The Cure! Literally one of my favourite albums ever, depressed or no.

  • angelikap

The Smiths were def conspicuously absent..

  • Asforteri

my dad once dramatically said, “sometimes you are alone and drinking and depressed and it's just you… and… neil” thanks dad, now i can't hear him without thinking about you wallowing and making me feel guilty for not calling more.

  • Asforteri

oh man. two-headed boy is definitely some fetal-position shit.

  • Asforteri

nominating pulp 'this is hardcore' but that might be more of an anxious album than depressed album..

  • http://fastfoodies.org Briana Ritz

    don't you mean…steven

  • scott

no im being serious. it's really underrated and it's really good and different than all of her other albums. it's not as commercial. you should check out some of the songs – some highlights include Irvine, Don't Waste Your Time, and Maybe. To be honest, the whole album is very cohesive and tells a nice story.

  • Waicool

    Mazzy Star

  • RamonaCC

“Blood on the Tracks” is so good and damn depressing as hell.

  • RamonaCC

In Rainbows came out four years ago? Damn, everything goes by so fast.

  • Waicool

    Mad Season

  • http://www.facebook.com/marishimo Jenna Humphrey

i'm a sadcore girl myself. i was so seriously into elliott smith and nick drake, and now i don't even touch it. i would add bon iver, cat power and sigur ros.

there's also something intrinsically sad about billie holiday, even though the songs themselves weren't always so…

  • Mylum

I agree with the lack Joy Division, but the album would have to ‘Closer.’

That album will Make you depressed no matter what mood you’re in.

  • Jon

Suggestions… perhaps some Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Thee Silver Mt. Zion… or, if you want something depressing, but with an angrier sound, listen to the albums My Downfall (Original Soundtrack) and Rossz Csillag Alatt Született by Venetian Snares.

A lot of the mellow stuff by pink floyd is what I listen to when I’m depressed. You know that floaty stage where nothing really matters anymore and you’re drifting. Not sure if I’d call it depressing, but I only listen to them when I’m depressed. Can’t name an album because it’s different tracks from Division Bell and The Wall but Comfortably Numb and Time are definitely UP THERE.

  • Insane Things I've Said To Women

Ladies. Please, stop throwing your panties at your computer screens. I don’t mean to be this sexy; it just happens. Even though I’m not a vegetarian, I have a lot of admiration for their kind. To stop eating meat, you are probably either ethical or health-conscious, both of which are appealing traits.

  • I Wanted To Be A Poem

The kiss was not well-executed. Our foreheads were interlocked, attempting to preclude the act. She was rubbing my temples, my shoulders, relaxing the malaise out of my muscles, working to my bone marrow. Why did I let her touch me, was I aroused by illogic? No. I wanted to be transcendent, cerebral. I wanted to be a poem.

  • Essay

Writing like this is what we call an essay — a try, an attempt. This is, of course, the etymology of the word — from the French, essayer, to try. This is not about creating a highly polished, clean, clear monolith. It’s about seeing how thoughts meet language and what kind of order might emerge.

As my observation continued, however, I found that they were all using exactly the same approaches in solving these problems. It should not be surprising since everyone including me did that in 4th grade too. We were told how to solve the problems and we just kept using the method.
